Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

The next morning, I met with Eleanor Vance, a formidable family law attorney known for dismantling high-conflict custody claims. Sitting in her glass-walled office overlooking downtown Chicago, I laid out the evidence: the twelve-second sanitized video Vanessa posted, the full four-minute recording from Nora, Dr. Patel’s explicit written guidelines, and Graham’s dismissive text messages.

Eleanor listened silently, taking notes with a silver fountain pen. When I finished, she leaned back, a small, grim smile touching her lips. "They overplayed their hand," Eleanor said simply. "Documenting a child's distress for social media clout while defying medical advice isn't just bad parenting—it’s evidence of psychological misconduct. But we need more than just defense, Annika. We need to audit everything."

Over the next three weeks, while Graham believed I was quietly crumbling, Eleanor and I built a fortress of documentation. We subpoenaed Dr. Patel’s clinical notes, which documented Lucy’s regression following visits to her father's house. I hired a private investigator who discovered that Vanessa’s "child development credentials"—which she had bragged about during dinners—were entirely fraudulent; she had taken a single online seminar and had been terminated from a previous private tutoring job for aggressive discipline tactics.

Meanwhile, at home, I created a sanctuary for Lucy. We established a peaceful routine where her speech was never judged, corrected, or timed. Slowly, the physical tension in her small shoulders began to melt away. She started singing along to radio songs again, her voice flowing freely in the safety of our living room.
