Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two years later, our lives had completely transformed. The name Mercer was gone; Lily and I had legally changed our last names back to my maiden name, Sterling. We were no longer defined by the man who had tried to break us.
At sixteen, Lily was thriving in her new school. She had made close friends, joined the track team, and her artwork was being featured in a local gallery exhibition for young artists.
I stood in the center of the bustling gallery, a glass of sparkling water in my hand, watching people admire Lily's collection. The centerpiece was a massive, triptych painting titled The Mark Beneath the Sleeve.
It was a powerful piece. The first panel showed darkness and hidden shadows; the second showed a shattering of glass and a brilliant beam of light; the third showed a mother and daughter standing hand-in-hand, looking out over a wide, endless ocean.
"She’s incredibly talented, Claire," a warm voice said beside me.
I turned to see Marcus Vance. He was no longer in his police detective suit, wearing a casual sweater and a genuine, relaxed smile. Over the past two years, Marcus had become a constant, supportive presence in our lives—first as a protector, then as a friend, and slowly, beautifully, into something more.
"She gets her strength from her mother," Marcus added, gently slipping his hand into mine.
I smiled, leaning against his shoulder. For so long, I had thought that love meant maintaining a perfect image, protecting a reputation, and keeping up appearances. Marcus had shown me that real love was about showing up in the dark, standing by someone when everything collapsed, and helping them rebuild from the ashes.
"Hey, guys!" Lily called out, jogging over to us with a bright, radiant smile. She was holding a blue ribbon. "The judges just announced it! I won the grand prize for the youth division!"
Marcus grinned, giving her a high-five. "I knew you would. It wasn't even close."

Lily looked at our joined hands, and the warmth in her eyes told me everything I needed to know. She wasn't afraid anymore. She didn't flinch when people approached. She was home.
"Let’s go celebrate," Lily said, grabbing my other hand. "My treat. I get the prize money next week!"
