Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark
I couldn't stay away from Lily. Despite my administrative leave, I sneaked into the ICU during the quiet hours of the night shift, aided by loyal nurses who knew the truth.
Lily looked so tiny in the massive ICU bed, surrounded by the rhythmic clicking and whistling of the life-support machinery. The swelling in her face had gone down, revealing the soft, beautiful features of the girl we had adopted four years ago.
I sat by her side, holding her hand, weeping silently. "Wake up, sweet girl. Please wake up. I need you to know you're safe."
As I sat there, her fingers suddenly twitched.
My breath caught. "Lily?"
Her eyelids fluttered, moving rapidly beneath the pale skin. A low, terrified moan escaped her lips. The monitors began to beep rapidly as her heart rate spiked.
"No... please... don't tell mom," she whispered, her voice a raspy, broken thread. "Please, Nathan... I'll be good. I'll be good."
Hearing her call him by his first name—a cold formality he had forced upon her to maintain his 'mentor' persona—broke my heart into pieces. But it was also the confirmation I needed.
"Lily, it's Mom," I said, leaning over her, tears streaming down my face. "He's not here. He can never hurt you again. I promise you, he is gone."
Her eyes blinked open, glassy and unfocused, filled with an ancient, deeply rooted terror. She looked around the sterile room, then focused on my face. "Mom?"
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here."
She tried to pull her arm away, as if trying to hide the bruises that were no longer covered by her sleeve. "The belt... he said if I told you, he would make sure you lost your medical license. He said you loved the hospital more than me... and that you'd hate me for ruining your life."
The sheer cruelty of his manipulation made me tremble with rage. "He lied to you, Lily. I love you more than life itself. The hospital means nothing without you. You didn't ruin anything. He did."
Before she could say more, the ICU doors swung open. Dr. Lauren Price rushed in, followed by two security guards.
"Claire, you have to leave," Lauren said, her face pale. "Nathan’s lawyers just showed up with the police. They have a court order enforcing his custody rights. They’re claiming you're tampering with a witness while she's under sedation. If you don't leave right now, Marcus won't be able to stop them from arresting you."
I looked down at Lily. Her eyes were wide with panic.

"Don't let him take me," she sobbed, her heart monitor blaring. "Mom, please!"
"I won't let him," I said, kissing her forehead. I looked up at Lauren. "Keep her sedated if you have to. Do not let him near her. I’m going to end this."
