Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

I left the hospital through the basement exit, avoiding the flashing cameras of the paparazzi and the waiting police cruisers. I didn't go to my lawyer's office, and I didn't go to a hotel.

I went to Nathan’s private office downtown.

As his wife, I still had a master keycard to the corporate building, and because the asset freeze hadn't been fully processed by the bank, my credentials hadn't been revoked yet. It was 3:00 AM. The building was completely dark.

I slipped past the security desk, nodding to the night guard who recognized me, and took the elevator to the penthouse suite.

Nathan’s office was a monument to his ego. Mahogany desks, awards from charitable foundations, and photographs of him shaking hands with governors and CEOs. But I wasn't looking at the walls. I went straight for his private safe hidden behind a painting of the Pennsylvania countryside.

I knew the combination. It was the date of his first major corporate victory—the day he successfully covered up a chemical spill for a major manufacturing client. He considered it the luckiest day of his life.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were stacks of cash, offshore bank account statements, and a series of encrypted flash drives. But at the very back, wrapped in a velvet cloth, was something else.

It was a backup hard drive labeled: Home/Personal Archives.

Nathan was a meticulous archivist. He kept records of everything because he believed knowledge was leverage. I plugged the drive into his desktop computer, my hands shaking as I bypassed his secondary security layers using his common passwords.

What I found made me physically ill.

There were hidden camera feeds from our house. Nathan hadn't just been abusing Lily; he had been monitoring her every move, tracking her phone, logs of her texts, and journals where he recorded her 'disobedient behavior' as justification for his punishments.

And then, I found the video from three nights ago.

The camera in the hallway outside the basement stairs had captured everything. I watched in absolute horror as Nathan stood over Lily, his face contorted in rage because she had forgotten to lock the back door. I saw him unbuckle his belt. I saw her try to run. I saw him strike her, sending her tumbling down the steep wooden stairs into the darkness.

I sat back, tears pouring down my face, clenching my teeth so hard they ached.

"I have you," I whispered to the empty room. "You monster. I have you."
