Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I didn't wait for the morning. I copied the files to a secure cloud drive, took the physical hard drive, and called Detective Vance and Diane.

By 8:00 AM, a closed-door emergency hearing was convened at the Bellhaven County Courthouse. Nathan arrived surrounded by three attorneys, wearing a pristine navy suit, looking like a man who had already won. He smiled warmly at the judge, a man he had golfed with for years.

"Your Honor," Nathan’s lead attorney began, "this is a tragic case of a mother suffering a severe psychological breakdown due to professional burnout, attempting to destroy a father's reputation to gain leverage in a domestic dispute."

Judge Harrison looked over his glasses at me, his expression stern. "Dr. Mercer, you are on administrative leave, and there are serious allegations of witness tampering against you. Do you have anything substantial to present, or should I finalize the temporary custody order for Mr. Mercer?"

Diane stood up calmly. "We have substantial evidence, Your Honor. We request the immediate submission of digital forensic evidence recovered from Mr. Mercer’s private server."

Nathan’s smile faltered slightly. He shot a quick, sharp look at his lead lawyer.

Diane opened her laptop and connected it to the courtroom’s projector screen. "This is a video recording taken from the residence at 412 Elm Lane, dated Monday night at 7:42 PM."

The video began to play.

The courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Nathan’s face drained of all color, turning a sickening shade of gray. The brutal reality of his actions played out in high-definition on the screen—the strike, the fall, and the cold, unfeeling way he stood at the top of the stairs, adjusting his cuffs before walking away to dial 911.

"Turn it off!" Nathan suddenly screamed, slamming his hands on the table, completely shattering his calm, professional persona. "That is private property! That evidence was obtained illegally!"

"Sit down, Mr. Mercer!" Judge Harrison roared, his face flushed with sudden, righteous anger. He looked at the screen, then at Nathan with utter disgust. "The emergency search warrant issued for the residence covers all digital monitoring devices. This evidence is fully admissible."

Judge Harrison slammed his gavel down so hard the sound echoed like a gunshot. "Effective immediately, the custody request by Nathan Mercer is denied. A permanent, non-contact restraining order is issued in favor of Claire Mercer and Lily Mercer. Furthermore..."

The judge looked over at Detective Vance, who was standing at the back of the courtroom with two uniform officers.

"Detective Vance, execute the warrant."

Marcus walked down the aisle, his handcuffs clicking open. Nathan backed away, his eyes wild with panic, looking around the room for an escape that didn't exist.

"Nathan Mercer, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, and tampering with evidence," Marcus said, pinning Nathan's arms behind his back.

As the officers dragged him out, Nathan looked back at me, his face twisted in a mask of pure malice. "You've ruined everything, Claire! You've ruined this family!"

"No," I said loudly, standing tall as he was led away in chains. "I saved it."
