Chapter 2 - The Rising Storm

The air in Treatment Room Six turned to ice.

Dr. Price and the trauma nurses didn’t move. In a busy emergency department, staff are trained to look for the unspoken cues of domestic violence, but none of them had expected to find it here, pinned beneath the impeccable reputation of Nathan Mercer.

"Claire," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave, adopting the smooth, patronizing tone he used when calming hysterical clients. "You're exhausted. You haven't slept in thirty-six hours because of your shift rotation. You're hallucinating patterns that don't exist."

"Get out," I said. My voice didn't shake. The coldness inside me had solidified into something hard, sharp, and lethal.

"I am her father," Nathan hissed, stepping closer. The mask of the grieving, supportive parent was slipping, revealing the calculating monster underneath. "You cannot bar me from my daughter's bedside based on a ridiculous, paranoid theory about a belt buckle."

"I am the Medical Director of this hospital," I replied, staring directly into his eyes, refusing to flinch. "And right now, I am invoking a formal safeguarding hold. Nurse Miller, call hospital security. And call the Bellhaven Police Department. Tell Detective Vance we have a suspected pediatric assault."

Nathan’s face went white. He looked at the nurses, then back at me. "You're destroying our family over a misunderstanding, Claire. Think about what this will do to Lily when she wakes up. Think about the press."

"I am thinking about my daughter," I said. "Security. Now."

Realizing he had lost control of the room, Nathan took a step back. He adjusted his cuffs out of habit, but his fingers were trembling. "This is a mistake. A catastrophic mistake. You'll be hearing from my attorneys before the night is over."

He turned on his heel and stroked out of the room just as two burly security guards arrived at the door.

The moment he was gone, the clinical detachment I had forced upon myself shattered. I dropped to my knees beside Lily's bed, gently taking her uninjured hand. Her fingers were so small, so cold.

"I'm so sorry, Lily," I whispered, tears finally blurring my vision. "I'm so sorry I didn't see it sooner."

"Dr. Mercer," Lauren Price said softly, placing a hand on my shoulder. "We need to get her to the CT scanner now. Her pupils are sluggish. We don't have time."

I wiped my eyes and stood up, swallowing the lump in my throat. "Go. I’ll be right outside."

As they wheeled Lily out, the emergency room seemed to hum with an oppressive, heavy silence. I stood alone in the center of the room, looking at the blood-stained sheets and the small, mud-streaked blue sock left behind on the floor.

The battle had begun, and I knew Nathan would use every weapon in his arsenal to destroy me before he let himself be exposed.
