Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Shadows

By midnight, the hospital had become a fortress. Detective Marcus Vance, a seasoned investigator who had worked with me on dozens of child abuse cases, sat with me in the small, windowless consultation room adjacent to the ICU.
"The CT scan shows a subdural hematoma, Claire," Marcus said gently, pushing a paper cup of black coffee toward me. "The neurosurgeon is monitoring it. For now, they don't need to operate, but she’s in a medically induced coma to keep the pressure down."
"And the skeletal survey?" I asked, my voice hollow.
Marcus sighed, opening a manila folder. "Multiple micro-fractures in the ribs. Various stages of healing. Some are weeks old, some are months old. Claire... this has been going on for a long time."
A wave of nausea hit me. I closed my eyes, remembering all the times Lily had claimed she was just sore from gym class, or why she had suddenly started wearing oversized hoodies even in the sweltering heat of August. I had been so consumed by the hospital's financial restructuring, so distracted by Nathan's constant assurances that she was just 'adjusting to teenage life,' that I had missed the horror unfolding right under my roof.
"Why didn't she tell me?" I choked out. "She knows what I do. She knows I could protect her."
"Abusers like Nathan are master manipulators," Marcus said. "They convince the victim that if they speak up, it will destroy the person they love. He probably told her that telling you would ruin your career, or shatter the family she had finally gained."
The door opened, and one of my administrative assistants peered in, looking panicked. "Dr. Mercer? There’s a team of lawyers downstairs. They have an emergency injunction signed by a judge. They're demanding Nathan be given access to Lily’s medical records and full visitation rights."
I stood up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the linoleum. "On what grounds?"
"They’re claiming you're using your position as Medical Director to alienate a father from his child during a medical crisis, and that you're suffering from a psychiatric break."
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. Nathan was moving fast. He had spent a decade building relationships with city judges, politicians, and high-powered defense attorneys. He was trying to frame me as an unstable, vindictive wife before the police could even file charges.
"Marcus?" I looked at the detective.

"I'm on it," Marcus said, pulling out his phone. "I'm calling the District Attorney. We have the physical evidence of the belt buckle mark. We need an emergency restraining order to override that injunction. But Claire... you need to get out of the house. Don't go back there tonight. Nathan will be looking for anything he can use against you."
"I'm not leaving this hospital," I said fiercely. "I'm staying right outside her door."
