Chapter 2 - The Rightful Heiress

The emergency room of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was a stark contrast to the opulence of Arden House. Under the harsh fluorescent lights, Sophia held Wren tightly, her heart hammering against her ribs as doctors and nurses swarmed around them. Cool IV fluids were administered, and a powerful antipyretic was injected into her tiny arm.

As the hours ticked by, the terrifying 104.1°F fever finally began to break. Wren’s breathing evened out, her skin cooling to a damp, normal temperature as she drifted into a deep, healing sleep. Only then did Sophia walk over to the bathroom mirror.

The reflection staring back was unrecognizable. Her left cheek was swollen, a dark purple bruise forming where her husband’s hand had struck her. A thin, crusted line of blood marked the corner of her lip. But beneath the physical trauma, her eyes were entirely dead to the family she had tried so hard to love.

For six years, Sophia had lived as the quiet, accommodating wife. When she married Grant Hart, she had willfully hidden her past. Her late father, Arthur Vance, had been a legendary real estate tycoon who despised the superficial aristocracy of families like the Harts. To protect Sophia from fortune hunters, Arthur had placed her colossal inheritance—including the massive estate known as Arden House—into a strict, ironclad trust overseen by the formidable legal powerhouse, Ms. Evelyn Baird.

Grant and Celeste believed Sophia was an orphan from a modest background, a woman who should be deeply grateful for the "charity" of marrying a Hart. They had even legally leased Arden House from a mysterious holding corporation, believing they were renting it from an anonymous billionaire. In reality, they were paying rent to Sophia’s trust.

Her phone buzzed. It was Evelyn Baird.

"The medical team has documented your injuries, Sophia. The police have taken the report," Evelyn’s voice was as sharp as a diamond. "And as for Arden House... the wolves have already begun to tear each other apart."

"Did you send the occupancy records?" Sophia asked, her voice devoid of emotion.

"I did. Five minutes before the main course was served. Every donor, museum board member, and business partner received a certified digital dossier detailing that Grant Hart does not own a single brick of Arden House. Furthermore, they received a copy of the emergency eviction notice for illegal subleasing and breach of the residential protection clause due to domestic violence."

Sophia closed her eyes, feeling the first wave of true freedom wash over her. "Thank you, Evelyn. Let's go home tomorrow. I want them out."
