Chapter 9 - Justice and Permanency
A year and a half after the kids were left on my porch, the final gavel came down.
In criminal court, Ryan and Ashley both pled guilty to lesser charges of child endangerment to avoid a lengthy trial. They were sentenced to three years of probation, massive fines, and a strict no-contact order with the children unless approved by a judge.
In family court, the custody hearing was emotional. Ryan and Ashley's parental rights were officially terminated by the state due to severe, documented neglect and failure to comply with their reunification plans.
I sat at the petitioner's table, David holding my left hand under the desk, my lawyer Sarah on my right.

Judge Harkness looked down at the paperwork. “Ms. Miller, you stepped up when these children were discarded. You have provided a safe, loving, and enriching environment. It is the ruling of this court that permanent guardianship and full legal custody are awarded to Hannah Miller, with the pathway to formal adoption approved.”
I broke down in tears. The fight was over. They were mine. No one could ever take them away, and no one could ever use them as pawns again.
