Chapter 10 - A Real Family (The Happy Ending)

Two years later.

It was a Sunday evening, much like the one where this all began, but the atmosphere couldn't have been more different.

The smell of roast chicken and fresh garlic bread filled my house. In the backyard, David was pushing Maya on the swing set we had built together over the summer. David and I were engaged now, planning a small wedding for the fall.

Inside, ten-year-old Leo was sitting at the kitchen island, diligently working on a science fair project. Sam, now six, was drawing a wildly inaccurate but very colorful picture of our family dog, a golden retriever mix we had adopted. Chloe and Toby were sitting on the floor, playing with building blocks, their laughter echoing through the room.

I stood by the stove, watching them. I thought back to the woman I was—the single, child-free thirty-four-year-old who liked quiet evenings and perfectly clean floors. I had thought my life was full back then. I had no idea how beautifully chaotic and deeply fulfilling it was meant to become.

My brother thought he was punishing me. He thought he was proving a point, forcing me into submission by dumping his "burdens" at my feet.

But as Leo looked up from his project, smiled, and said, "Hey Mom, can you help me with this?" my heart swelled with an indescribable, fierce love.

Ryan hadn't given me a burden. He had handed me my greatest blessing, completely wrapped up in a thin blanket on a freezing porch. And I would spend the rest of my life making sure these kids knew they were the greatest prize I could have ever asked for.
