Chapter 7 - A New Routine and Unexpected Allies

Months passed, and the changing seasons brought a beautiful transformation to my home. The kids were thriving. Leo’s grades skyrocketed now that he had a quiet place to do his homework and wasn't managing his siblings. Maya joined a local ballet class, discovering a love for dancing that didn't involve chaotic screaming. Sam finally stopped having tantrums and learned to use his words, and Chloe took her first steps in my living room, walking straight into my open arms.

I didn't do it alone. The saying "it takes a village" was true, and I found mine. My neighbor, Mrs. Gable, a retired teacher, volunteered to watch the kids for a few hours on weekends so I could grocery shop in peace. The kids' school counselor, a warm man named David, became a pillar of support, helping Leo process his trauma. David and I ended up getting coffee one afternoon, which turned into dinner, and slowly, an unexpected, gentle romance began to bloom amidst the chaos of my new life.

I also returned to work, negotiating a hybrid schedule. The house was loud, messy, and constantly moving, but it was filled with genuine joy. We had movie nights on Fridays, pancake Sundays, and bedtime stories every single night.

Supervised visits with Ryan and Ashley were disastrous. They would show up late to the CPS office, complain about the rules, and spend more time trying to manipulate the kids into saying they wanted to come home than actually bonding with them. Leo started refusing to go into the visitation room, and eventually, the therapist recommended pausing the visits for his mental health.
