Chapter 8 - The Turning Point

The ultimate breaking point came when Ashley gave birth to baby number five, a little boy named Toby.

Because of the ongoing criminal charges and the active CPS case involving the other four children, the hospital social worker flagged Ashley’s file immediately. CPS stepped in before Toby even left the hospital. They deemed Ryan and Ashley’s home unsafe and unfit, especially since they had failed their psychological evaluations and skipped half their parenting classes.

I received the call on a Tuesday. "Ms. Miller, we need a placement for the newborn."

I looked at my chaotic, beautiful, toy-filled living room. Four was hard. Five was a small army. But leaving Toby in the system was never an option.

"Bring him to me," I said.

When Toby arrived, the dynamic shifted entirely. Ryan and Ashley turned on each other. The stress of losing five children and facing criminal trials broke their marriage. Ryan blamed Ashley's crazy "lesson," and Ashley blamed Ryan for not providing enough money to hire a nanny. They filed for divorce, trying to throw one another under the bus to get favorable plea deals from the prosecutor.

My parents finally hit rock bottom. With Ryan facing actual prison time and the marriage dissolving, they showed up at my house one last time. Not to yell, but to cry. They begged for forgiveness, admitting they had enabled Ryan his whole life and sacrificed me to keep the peace.

I listened to them on the porch. “I forgive you,” I told them, and I meant it. Holding onto anger was exhausting. “But that doesn't mean you get to be in our lives. The kids need stability, not people who only show up when the golden child fails.”

I closed the door, finally severing the toxic ties that had held me down for over thirty years.
