Chapter 6 - The Court Battle Begins

The preliminary custody hearing was a circus. Ryan and Ashley showed up looking dressed for church, playing the roles of overwhelmed, victimized parents. Ashley's baby bump was visible, a prop they clearly hoped would sway the judge. My parents sat behind them, glaring daggers at my back.

Their lawyer argued that it was a moment of "postpartum-induced mental breakdown" mixed with pregnancy hormones, and that Ryan was simply supporting his distressed wife. They requested immediate reunification.

Then, my lawyer, Sarah, stood up. She didn't just bring the doorbell footage; she brought text messages.

Through a court subpoena of Ashley's phone, we acquired texts she sent to her friends the night they dropped the kids off. “Dumping the brats at Hannah’s. She thinks she can tell me no? Let’s see how she likes a taste of her own medicine. We’re going to a spa hotel in the city for the weekend.”

The judge, a stern-faced woman named Judge Harkness, read the text aloud in the courtroom. The silence that followed was deafening. Ryan buried his face in his hands. My parents went pale.

“A spa weekend?” Judge Harkness said, her voice dripping with venom. “You left an infant and three young children outside in thirty-degree weather so you could go to a spa to teach your sister a lesson?”

“Your Honor, I can explain—” Ashley stammered.

“You will explain it to the criminal court, ma'am,” the judge snapped. “Temporary physical and legal custody remains with Ms. Miller. Supervised visitation only, and I am ordering mandatory parenting classes and psychological evaluations before we even discuss reunification.”

I exhaled a breath I felt like I had been holding for weeks. We had won the first battle.
