Chapter 4 - Custody and Chaos

The next three weeks were a trial by fire. Going from a single, child-free woman to a mother of four overnight was like jumping onto a moving freight train. I took an emergency leave of absence from my marketing job—thankfully, my boss was incredibly supportive after I explained the situation.
I hired a fierce family law attorney named Sarah Jenkins. She warned me that Ryan and Ashley’s parents (my parents) would likely try to intervene, bail them out, and fight for custody.
“Let them try,” I told Sarah. “I want to file for full, permanent guardianship. And I want a restraining order against my brother and his wife for the children.”
Life inside my house was slowly finding a rhythm, but it was hard. The kids had zero structure at their old home. Maya ate candy for breakfast, Sam threw raging tantrums when he was told 'no,' and Leo constantly tried to parent the younger ones. I had to gently but firmly implement rules, bedtimes, and chores. I learned how to French braid Maya's hair, how to make dinosaur-shaped sandwiches for Sam, and how to soothe Chloe’s teething pain.
One afternoon, while I was folding laundry, Leo walked in.
“Auntie Hannah?” he asked quietly. “Are we ever going back to Mom and Dad’s?”
I paused, looking at his anxious face. I chose honesty, padded with love. “I don't know, Leo. The judge has to decide what’s safest for you. But I promise you this: as long as you are here, you are safe, you are loved, and you don’t have to worry about anything. Okay?”

He nodded, a small smile breaking through. “I like it here. It's quiet.”
My heart ached. A house with four kids shouldn't feel "quiet" to an eight-year-old, but compared to the yelling and chaos of his parents' home, my house was a sanctuary.
