Chapter 9 - The Vows of the Underworld

The wedding on the cliffs of the Hamptons was unlike anything society columnists had ever seen or recorded.
There were no tabloid cameras, no flashing paparazzi lenses, and no forced political alliances. Instead, the sprawling lawns of the Starks estate were lit by thousands of twinkling fairy lights strung through the ancient oak trees, casting a golden glow over the white marquee tent erected right against the edge of the roaring Atlantic.
The guest list was small, exclusive, and fiercely loyal: high-ranking syndicate leaders who respected Rory’s absolute authority, trusted legal advisors who had helped rewrite the family’s legacy toward legitimate global logistics, and close friends who had stood by them through the darkest storms.
As the string quartet played a soft, classical melody, the heavy oak doors of the mansion swung wide open.
Veronica stepped out onto the wide stone terrace, taking everyone's breath away. She wore a stunning, minimalist gown of French ivory silk that draped elegantly around her silhouette, understated yet breathtakingly graceful. In her hair rested a delicate silver comb set with small white pearls, and in her hands, she carried a bouquet of white roses and lavender sprigs.
Walking just ahead of her, acting as the most adorable flower girls in history, were Lily and Rose. Dressed in matching tulle dresses that made them look like miniature princesses, they scattered soft pink rose petals along the stone pathway with intense, serious concentration, occasionally stopping to giggle at each other.
At the end of the aisle, standing beneath a grand archway of white hydrangeas and eucalyptus leaves, stood Rory.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders to perfection, his dark hair neatly styled, his fierce expression completely melted away by a smile so radiant and tender that it made the hardened capos sitting in the front row blink in disbelief.
As Veronica walked down the stone aisle, her eyes locked entirely with his, the distance between their past lives—the wealthy underworld boss and the quiet estate maid—vanished into nothingness. They were simply two souls who had found safety, truth, and profound love in the wreckage of a storm.
She reached the altar, and Rory stepped forward, taking her hands in his. His grip was warm, steady, and filled with an unspoken promise that spanned all eternity.
The officiant—a retired federal judge who had known the family for decades—began the ceremony, but neither Rory nor Veronica needed to hear the traditional vows. Their vows had already been written in the silent hallways at three in the morning, in the courage it took to tear open a monster’s hiding place, and in the unwavering dedication to protect what mattered most.
“Do you, Rory Starks, take Veronica Cruz to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love her, protect her, and stand beside her through every storm?”
Rory looked deep into Veronica’s eyes, his voice ringing clear, strong, and unwavering across the quiet lawn.
“I do,” he said, sliding a heavy, custom-designed platinum band encrusted with rare diamonds onto her finger. “For all time.”
“And do you, Veronica Cruz, take Rory Starks to be your lawfully wedded husband, to share his life, his home, and his heart?”
Veronica smiled, her eyes shining with unshed tears of absolute happiness.
“I do,” she replied clearly, placing the matching ring onto his finger.
“By the power vested in me, and before these witnesses, I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the judge smiled warmly. “Rory, you may kiss your bride.”

Rory didn't hesitate. He pulled Veronica into his arms, wrapping her in a deep, passionate, and utterly triumphant kiss that brought the entire gathering to their feet in thunderous applause and cheering. Lily and Rose squealed with delight, jumping up and down and throwing the remaining handfuls of rose petals into the air like confetti.
The nightmare of the past was officially dead and buried. The future was bright, warm, and entirely their own.
