Chapter 7 - The Dawn of a New Era

The first light of dawn was breaking over the Hamptons shoreline when the convoy of black SUVs rolled back through the wrought-iron gates of the Starks estate. The tires crunched softly on the wet gravel, coming to a smooth stop outside the grand double front doors.
Rory stepped out into the crisp morning air. He looked tired, the shadows beneath his dark eyes testifying to a sleepless night, but his posture was upright, his shoulders unburdened by the weight of an invisible war for the first time in years.
He walked up the stone steps, pushed open the heavy oak door, and stepped into the quiet foyer. The house was still sleeping, wrapped in a peaceful, unbroken silence that felt entirely different from the heavy, suffocating dread of previous weeks.
As he crossed the marble entryway toward the grand staircase, a soft sound caught his attention.
Standing near the kitchen doorway, holding a steaming mug of peppermint tea, was Veronica. She was dressed in her neat black-and-white uniform, her hair tied back in a clean ponytail, watching him with an expression of quiet, unwavering support.
Rory stopped at the foot of the stairs. He looked at her for a long moment, the hard lines of the mafia boss melting away, leaving behind only a weary, grateful man.
“It’s over,” Rory said quietly, his voice carrying clearly across the open foyer. “Vance signed the full confession and transferred his entire portfolio. He’s on a private transport heading straight for a federal holding facility in upstate New York. He will never pose a threat to anyone again.”
Veronica let out a long, slow breath she didn't realize she’d been holding. A bright, genuine smile bloomed across her face, making her look years younger, warm and radiant against the formal coldness of the mansion.
“Thank God,” she whispered, stepping closer. “And the girls?”
“Still sleeping soundly,” Rory replied, a faint smile touching his lips. “For the first time in months, they didn't wake up at three in the morning. No buzzing. No shadows. Just rest.”
Veronica nodded, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief. She turned to walk back toward the kitchen, but Rory’s voice stopped her.
“Veronica.”
She paused, turning back to face him. “Yes, Mr. Starks?”
Rory crossed the distance between them, stopping just a few feet away. In the soft morning light filtering through the high foyer windows, the immense distance between the feared underworld boss and the humble estate maid seemed to dissolve entirely.
“For months, this house was a tomb,” Rory said softly, his dark eyes fixed entirely on her. “Every person I trusted, every professional I hired, told me I was losing my mind, that my children were broken. You were the only one who saw the truth. You were the only one who had the courage to look inside the monster and pull it apart.”
“I just did what needed to be done,” Veronica said softly, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink.

“You did more than that,” Rory said, taking a step closer, his voice dropping into a warm, resonant timbre. “You saved my daughters. And in doing so... you brought life back into this house.”
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently taking hers, his thumb brushing over her knuckles with a tenderness that spoke volumes of unsaid promises.
