Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By eight o’clock that evening, the Starks estate had transformed from a quiet family sanctuary into an armed military compound. Black SUVs with tinted windows lined the curved gravel driveway, their engines idling in the cold night air, exhaust pluming like smoke dragons in the headlights.

Inside the grand foyer, men in tailored black suits and tactical vests moved with quiet, lethal efficiency, checking submachine guns, fastening communication headsets, and reviewing digital blueprints on encrypted tablets.

Upstairs, in the master suite, Veronica stood beside the twin beds. Lily and Rose were finally sleeping peacefully for the first time in months. The color had begun to return to their cheeks, their breathing slow, even, and untroubled by the phantom buzzing that had tortured their minds for eight long weeks.

The door clicked open softly, and Rory stepped into the room. He had changed into a dark tactical turtleneck, heavy combat boots, and a ballistic vest over his broad chest. The cold, ruthless aura of the mob boss was back in full force, but as he walked over to the edge of the twin beds and gently pulled the duvet up over Rose’s shoulder, his expression softened with profound tenderness.

He reached down, brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from Lily’s forehead. The little girl murmured softly in her sleep, turning her face into her pillow, completely safe.

Rory stood up and walked toward the door, where Veronica was waiting quietly by the frame.

“You saved them, Veronica,” Rory said, his voice dropping its usual commanding edge, replaced by a raw, genuine vulnerability that only she was privileged to witness. “In two months, no one else in this house—not the doctors, not the security detail, not my closest advisors—saw what was right in front of them. You looked past the symptoms and found the root.”

“I only looked where a mother would look, Mr. Starks,” Veronica replied softly, her hands folded in front of her apron. “Children don't scream for no reason. Someone just had to be willing to listen.”

Rory paused, his dark eyes studying her face with an intensity that made her breath catch slightly in her throat. For a man who trusted no one, trusting Veronica had become as natural as breathing.

“When I come back tonight, this war will be over,” Rory said firmly, his jaw set. “Viktor Vance will either sign over his entire share of the syndicate and leave the country, or he will cease to exist. Either way, my daughters will never have to look at another monster again.”

“Be careful, sir,” Veronica whispered, her hand briefly touching his forearm—a gesture far more intimate than any employee had ever dared make with the feared mafia boss. “The girls need their father.”

Rory looked down at her hand on his arm, a rare, genuine warmth flickering in his dark eyes. He covered her hand with his large, calloused palm for a brief second before pulling away.

“Watch them for me, Veronica,” he said quietly. Then, he turned and strode down the hallway, disappearing into the night as the convoy of black SUVs rolled out down the Hamptons drive.
