Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Ledger

The sun did little to warm the stone facade of the Starks estate when it finally broke over the Atlantic three hours later. The gray mist clung to the cliffs, turning the sprawling lawns into a damp, monochromatic canvas.
Inside the massive mahogany-paneled study on the second floor, the air was thick with the scent of burning Turkish tobacco and cold black coffee.
Rory sat behind a massive oak desk that had belonged to his grandfather—a man who had built the family fortune on bootleg whiskey and broken bones. Spread out across the polished wood were a dozen encrypted financial ledgers, shipping manifests from the Port of Newark, and high-resolution photographs of men whose faces were synonymous with federal indictments and syndicate wars.
Veronica stood near the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, her hands neatly folded in front of her black uniform apron. She had spent the last two hours cleaning up the nursery, calming the twins until exhaustion finally dragged them into a fitful, dreamless sleep under heavy sedatives prescribed by a trusted, off-the-books physician.
“You’re certain they mentioned the bear, Veronica?” Rory asked, his voice low, gravelly, and flat. He didn't look up from a photograph of Viktor Vance standing beside a docked cargo container at Sunset Marine.
“They’ve mentioned it three times this week, Mr. Starks,” Veronica replied, her tone respectful yet steady, unbothered by the heavy aura of intimidation that radiated from the boss. “At first, I thought it was just typical childhood superstition—night terrors brought on by a new environment. But children don't hallucinate the exact same auditory triggers at the exact same minute every single night unless something in their immediate environment is physically causing it.”
Rory raised his head. His dark eyes locked onto hers, assessing her with the cold, analytical gaze he usually reserved for rival capos sitting across a ransom table. For months, his security teams—men trained by military intelligence and private defense contractors—had swept every square inch of the mansion for bugs, listening devices, and hidden cameras. They had found nothing. The house was supposed to be an impenetrable fortress.
“My security team swept that room twice last week,” Rory said, his voice dropping an octave. “Thermal imaging, RF detectors, acoustic sniffers. They found zero signals transmitting outside the perimeter.”
“Electronics can be shielded, sir. Or they can operate on frequencies that only register under specific atmospheric conditions, or perhaps… they aren't transmitting at all,” Veronica said carefully, stepping closer to the desk. She pointed a finger toward the photograph of Viktor Vance. “Mr. Vance gave them that bear himself. He claimed it was hand-stitched by an artisan in Bavaria. Did anyone inspect the interior of the toy?”
Rory went completely still. The ash on the end of his cigarette dropped unheeded onto the edge of an ashtray.
Viktor Vance was his partner in the international shipping syndicate, but lately, Vance had been pushing to expand operations into territories Rory had explicitly forbidden—human trafficking and synthetic narcotics distribution. Rory had blocked him at every turn, reminding the board that the Starks family had lines they refused to cross. If Vance wanted a war, hitting the boss where he was weakest—his twin daughters—was exactly the kind of cold, calculated maneuver a sociopath like Vance would pull.
“No,” Rory whispered, the realization dawning with the force of a physical blow. “No one cut open a collector’s item gifted by a founding partner. It would have looked like paranoia.”
“Paranoia keeps you alive in your line of work, Mr. Starks,” Veronica replied quietly. “And right now, your daughters are paying the price for your restraint.”

Rory stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward against the wainscoting. Without a word to Veronica, he strode across the study, his hand sliding beneath his desk to press a concealed brass toggle.
A hidden panel in the mahogany bookcase slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a concealed armory and tactical gear locker.
