Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Two years passed. Lila was now ten years old, thriving in school, a straight-A student, and the captain of her local soccer team. The fearful little girl who had whispered in the hallway seemed like a lifetime ago, replaced by a confident, vibrant young girl who knew exactly how loved she was.

One evening, as Harper was tucking Lila into bed, Lila looked up at her mother, her eyes clear and peaceful.

"Mom?" Lila asked softly.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Do you remember when I told you about Daddy's bad game?"

Harper’s heart softened, but there was no pain attached to the memory anymore. "I do, baby."

"I was so scared you would disappear," Lila whispered, reaching out to hold her mother's hand. "But you didn't. You stayed. You made the dark go away."

Harper leaned down, kissing her daughter’s forehead, her heart overflowing with a profound sense of fulfillment. "I will always stay, Lila. There is no darkness in the world big enough to make me leave you. That's a promise."
