Chapter 8 - A New Dawn


With the legal storm entirely behind them, Harper decided it was time for a fresh start. They packed up the apartment that held too many tense memories and moved to a beautiful, sunlit house closer to the coast, where the air smelled of salt and freedom.
The new house had a big backyard with an old oak tree, perfect for a tire swing. Lila’s new bedroom had large windows that let in the morning sun, and she chose to paint the walls a bright, cheerful yellow.

There were no dark secrets here. There were no hidden spaces. The doors were left open, and the house was constantly filled with music, the scent of fresh baking, and the sounds of Lila playing with the neighborhood children.
Harper also found herself breathing easier. She took up gardening, finding peace in digging her hands into the earth and watching new life grow. For the first time in years, she wasn't looking over her shoulder. She was looking forward.
