Chapter 5 - The Midnight Raid

The night of the raid was the longest night of Harper's life. She held Lila tight in her bed, reading her fairy tales until the little girl fell asleep, breathing softly against her mother’s shoulder. Meanwhile, across the city, heavily armed tactical units breached David’s upscale apartment building.
At 3:00 AM, Harper’s phone vibrated.
"It's over," Marcus said, his voice exhausted but triumphant. "We caught him red-handed. He was in the middle of a transaction when we breached. We found over forty pounds of narcotics hidden exactly where Lila said they were—in the crawlspace behind her bedroom closet."
"Is he... is he in jail?" Harper asked, a tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek.

"He’s in federal custody, Harper. No bail. With the drug charges combined with child endangerment and using a minor to facilitate a felony, he’s looking at twenty to thirty years minimum. He will never, ever be allowed near Lila again."
Harper hung up the phone and fell to her knees by her bed, weeping tears of profound relief. The shadow that had hung over her family since the divorce was finally lifted. Her daughter was safe.
