Chapter 7 - The Trial and Triumph

Six months later, Harper found herself sitting in a federal courtroom. David sat at the defense table, stripped of his expensive suits, wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. He looked defeated, refusing to meet Harper's fierce, steady gaze.

Because of Lila's age and the meticulous work done by Dr. Ramos, the judge ruled that Lila did not have to testify in person. Her videotaped forensic interview was played for the courtroom instead.

Watching her daughter on the screen—so small, yet so honest and brave—Harper felt an overwhelming sense of pride. When the judge handed down the sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole, a heavy weight officially evaporated from Harper's shoulders.

The judge looked directly at Harper before adjourning the court. "Ms. Mercer, your swift action and unwavering protection of your daughter not only saved her life, but brought down a dangerous network. You are a exemplary mother."

As Harper walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sun, Marcus was waiting for her on the steps. He offered her a warm smile and a tight hug. "You did it, Harper. It's really over."
