Chapter 2 - The Call in the Dark

The moment Lila fell into a fragile, exhausted sleep in her bedroom, Harper walked into the kitchen. Her hands were shaking so violently she nearly dropped her phone. The words “If I told you, you would go away” echoed in her mind like a sinister loop. She knew she couldn’t wait until morning. She couldn’t let David know she knew.
She dialed a number she had kept saved but hoped she would never have to use: Detective Marcus Vance, a childhood friend who now worked in the Special Victims and Family Crimes unit.
"Harper?" Marcus’s voice was gruff, thick with sleep, but instantly alert. "What’s wrong? It’s two in the morning."
"It’s David," Harper whispered, her voice cracking as she leaned against the kitchen counter, tears finally spilling over. "Lila just came home. She’s terrified, Marcus. He’s playing some kind of twisted 'secret game' with her. He threatened her, told her I would leave if she talked. He’s hiding something awful."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. Marcus didn’t ask if she was sure; he knew Harper, and he knew the history of her volatile divorce from David.

"Listen to me carefully, Harper," Marcus said, his tone shifting into pure professional authority. "Do not confront him. Do not text him angry messages. Right now, we need to protect Lila and document everything. I’m coming over with a child specialist from Social Services. We’re going to handle this the right way so he can never touch her again."
While she waited, Harper stood by Lila’s bed, watching the gentle rise and fall of her daughter's chest. The fierce, protective maternal instinct inside her solidified into concrete. David had thought he could use a child's fear to shield his actions, but he had underestimated the power of a mother's love. The battle had begun, and Harper was ready to fight.
