Chapter 10 - The Sun Always Rises

Years later, a beautiful summer afternoon found the Mercer backyard filled with laughter and the smoke of a barbecue. It was Lila’s high school graduation party. The yard was decorated in gold and white streamers, crowded with friends, teachers, and family. Marcus was there, flipping burgers at the grill and joking with the guests.

Lila stood in the center of her friends, wearing her graduation cap, her smile radiant and completely unburdened. She was heading to a top university in the fall on a full scholarship, planning to study child psychology so she could help other children find their voices, just as Dr. Ramos had helped her.

Harper stood on the back porch, watching her daughter shine. She felt a gentle hand on her shoulder; Marcus had walked up beside her, handing her a glass of lemonade.

"She’s spectacular, Harper," Marcus said quietly, looking out at Lila. "You did an incredible job."

"We did it," Harper corrected softly, smiling at him. "Together."

Lila caught her mother’s eye from across the lawn. She excused herself from her friends and walked over to the porch. Without a word, she wrapped her arms around Harper, burying her face in her mother's neck just as she had done when she was small.

"I love you, Mom," Lila whispered. "Thank you for everything."

Harper held her daughter tight, looking out at the sun-drenched yard, filled with love, safety, and a future brighter than she had ever dared to dream. The game was long over, the dark had been vanquished, and they had won.
