Chapter 1 - The Weight of Despair

Little Camila Alarcón, the only daughter of Rodrigo Alarcón—a ruthless businessman carrying deep emotional scars—had just been given the kind of news no parent could survive without breaking. A rare and merciless illness was slowly destroying her fragile body, and every specialist Rodrigo flew in from Europe gave the same heartless conclusion:
“Prepare yourselves. She has no more than three months.”
That afternoon, Claudia quietly stepped into the nursery.
Camila lay weak and pale in her crib, her tiny breaths barely noticeable. Rodrigo sat beside her in an armchair, exhausted beyond words, his powerful hands helpless, his eyes hollow from countless sleepless nights.
“Sir… would you like some tea?” Claudia asked gently.
At first, Rodrigo didn’t respond. Then he finally lifted his gaze, his voice rough with grief and anger.
“Tea won’t save my daughter, Claudia.”
That night, while the entire mansion slept, Claudia remained beside the little girl. She held Camila close and softly sang the lullaby her mother once sang to her.
And in that quiet, fragile moment… a memory returned.
Her younger brother.
The same disease.
The same doctors giving up hope.
And the same man—a forgotten doctor living in the mountains—who had saved him using treatments no hospital would ever accept.
Claudia hesitated. Rodrigo was the kind of man who dismissed employees for even suggesting unconventional solutions. But watching Camila breathe so faintly, like a candle about to die out… she knew she couldn’t stay silent.
The following morning, while Rodrigo signed documents and prepared for the inevitable, Claudia gathered every bit of courage she had.
“Sir… I know someone. A doctor who treated my brother when nobody else could help him. He doesn’t promise miracles, but he tries. Please… let me contact him.”
Rodrigo rose so abruptly that his chair scraped harshly across the marble floor.
“You think my daughter’s life should be trusted to folk medicine?” he snapped. “Leave, Claudia. Before I lose the last bit of patience I still have.”
She lowered her head and quietly wiped away her tears as she walked out, but her determination remained.
Two days later, Camila’s condition worsened dramatically.
She could barely open her eyes.
Her breathing became uneven and strained.
Even the machines monitoring her seemed to pulse with panic.
Rodrigo slammed his fist onto the desk, his voice cracking in desperation.
“There has to be something we can do!”
And then… he remembered Claudia’s words.
Her unwavering eyes.
Her certainty.
For the first time in his life, his pride disappeared.
Barely above a whisper, he asked:
“Claudia… is that doctor still alive? Tell me where to find him.”
Claudia stared at him in surprise.
“Yes, sir. But he doesn’t trust wealthy people. He only helps when he believes the family’s intentions are sincere.”
Rodrigo swallowed hard. Maybe for the first time, he understood that money couldn’t control everything.
“Do whatever you must,” he said quietly. “Just… save my daughter.”
Before sunrise the next morning, Claudia wrapped Camila in a blanket and carried her into the mountains. Rodrigo followed beside her, hidden beneath a hood, as they traveled toward a remote village untouched by time.
At last, they stopped outside a small wooden cabin.
Before they could knock, an elderly man stepped outside.
His eyes were sharp and piercing.
“You came searching for miracles,” he said coldly. “You won’t find them here. I deal only in truth. And truth is painful.”
A chill ran through Rodrigo’s body. No one had ever dared speak to him that way.
Claudia held Camila closer and whispered nervously,
“Doctor… we aren’t asking for miracles. Just… a chance. She deserves that much.”
The old doctor examined the little girl carefully. For a brief moment, his stern expression softened.
“What she has is severe. Very severe. But it isn’t hopeless.”

Rodrigo stepped forward, barely breathing.
“So… you can save her?” he asked. “Name your price. I’ll give you anything. Anything at all.”
