Chapter 9 - The Promise of Forever

Two years had passed.

The jacaranda tree in the yard of the Coyoacán house was in full bloom, dropping beautiful purple petals onto the grass. The sound of children’s laughter filled the warm afternoon air.

Sofia, now eight years old, was running through the grass, chasing two-year-old Lucia, who was toddling happily on her sturdy little legs, giggling uncontrollably. Lucia had her father’s dark, expressive eyes and her mother’s fierce, determined spirit.

Valeria stood on the terrace, watching them with a smile of pure contentment. She had returned to her work at San Gabriel Hospital, but on her own terms, working part-time so she could spend more time with her daughters. She looked radiant, peaceful, and deeply loved.

Elias walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. He inhaled the scent of her hair, feeling a profound sense of gratitude.

"What are you thinking about?" he whispered, kissing her neck.

"Just how far we've come," Valeria smiled, leaning back against his chest. "Two years ago, I was a single, pregnant doctor terrified of the future. Now, I have everything I ever dreamed of."

"You deserve it all, Valeria," Elias said, turning her around in his arms so he could look into her eyes. "You saved me. You saved Sofia. You gave us a real family."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. Valeria’s breath caught in her throat.

Elias dropped to one knee, holding her hands in his. He looked up at her, his eyes shining with a love that had been tested by fire and had emerged pure and unbreakable.

"Valeria Torres, you are my heart, my soul, and my home. You showed me what it means to be brave, what it means to love without fear. Will you do me the honor of marrying me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life making you happy?"

Valeria’s eyes filled with happy tears. She looked at the beautiful ring, and then at the man who had abandoned everything to choose her.

"Yes, Elias," she whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "A thousand times, yes."

Sofia and Lucia, seeing their parents, came running over. Sofia gasped, seeing the ring. "Are you getting married? Can I be the flower girl?"

"Only if Lucia promises not to eat the petals," Valeria laughed, picking up Lucia, while Elias pulled Sofia into a warm embrace.

They stood together under the blooming jacaranda tree, a family bound not by wealth, status, or duty, but by love, truth, and forgiveness.
