Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Doña Leonor

The Robles estate in Las Lomas was an imposing fortress of stone, wrought iron, and perfectly manicured gardens. Built in the colonial style but modernized with expansive glass panes, it practically screamed old money and absolute authority.
The next morning, after Sofia had been safely discharged from the hospital under the care of a trusted nanny, Elias drove straight to his mother’s residence. His hands gripped the steering wheel of his SUV so tightly his knuckles turned white. The anger that had been simmering inside him all night had boiled over into a cold, hard resolve.
He bypassed the butler, walking straight into the sunlit breakfast room where Doña Leonor Robles sat sipping her espresso, draped in silk and wearing her signature pearls. At sixty-five, Leonor was still a striking woman, with sharp, calculating eyes and a posture that demanded submission. Opposite her sat Rodrigo, Elias’s younger brother, looking thoroughly hungover and nervous.
"Elias," Leonor said, not even looking up from her tablet. "You look terrible. I trust Sofia is fine? The nanny said it was just a minor fracture. Honestly, Elias, you should have sent her to the private clinic in Santa Fe, not that chaotic public hospital."
"How did you find out about Valeria?" Elias asked, his voice dangerously quiet.
Leonor paused, her espresso cup hovering inches from her lips. She slowly set it down on the saucer, the clink of porcelain echoing in the quiet room. She looked at Rodrigo, who immediately shifted uncomfortably in his seat, avoiding his brother's gaze.
"So, it's true then," Leonor said, her tone perfectly conversational, as if they were discussing the weather. "The little doctor is indeed pregnant. And I assume, based on your dramatic entrance, that the child is yours."
"I asked you a question, Mother," Elias said, stepping closer to the table, his shadow falling over her. "How do you know about her? And what did you mean when you told Rodrigo that her baby should never be born?"
Leonor sighed, folding her hands on the table. "Don't raise your voice to me, Elias. I am your mother, and everything I do, I do for the preservation of this family. Yes, I hired a private investigator when you started acting erratically six months ago. I needed to know who was distracting you from your duties at the firm. I found out about the girl. A middle-class pediatrician with no background, no family of standing, and a father who died in debt."
"She is an honorable woman!" Elias snarled. "She saves lives every single day. She has more integrity in her little finger than this entire family has in its DNA!"
"Integrity does not pay the mortgages on our developments, nor does it secure our political alliances," Leonor said coldly. "She was a distraction. And when she left, I thought the problem was solved. But then my investigator informed me that she had been spotted at an obstetrician's office. Seven months pregnant. It doesn't take a genius to calculate the timeline."
Rodrigo cleared his throat, trying to play the peacemaker. "Look, Elias, Mom was just worried. A bastard child with a woman like that... it complicates things. The inheritance, the press, the Robles name. Sofia is the legitimate heir. We don't need a scandal."
Elias turned a glare so lethal on his brother that Rodrigo instantly went silent. "If you ever use the word 'bastard' to describe my child again, Rodrigo, I will personally ensure you are stripped of your position at the firm and your allowance is permanently canceled."
"Elias!" Leonor barked, her eyes flashing with anger. "Do not threaten your brother. He is right. That woman is a opportunist. She knew exactly what she was doing when she got pregnant. She wants a piece of the Robles fortune, and she is using that child as a golden ticket."
"She didn't even tell me she was pregnant!" Elias shouted, his control finally snapping. "I found out last night, by sheer accident, because Sofia fell! Valeria didn't ask me for a single peso. She didn't call me. She was ready to raise my child alone because she knew how toxic and heartless this family is. And she was right!"
Leonor stood up, her silk robe rustling. She matched her son's fierce gaze with her own icy resolve. "Listen to me, Elias. I will not have our family name dragged through the mud. I will not have some lower-class doctor forcing her way into our lives. If she gives birth to that child, I will make her life a living hell. I will tie her up in custody battles that will drain every penny she has. I will ensure she loses her license to practice medicine in this city. I have the power to do it, and you know I will."
Elias stared at his mother, feeling a profound sense of disgust. For years, he had bowed to her will, believing that protecting his daughter Sofia meant keeping his mother happy. But now, seeing the depths of her malice, he realized that his compliance had only enabled her cruelty.
"You won't do anything, Mother," Elias said, his voice dropping to a whisper that was far more terrifying than his shouts.
"Oh? And how will you stop me?" Leonor sneered.
"Because if you so much as breathe in Valeria's direction, if you hire one more investigator, if you make one single threat against her or my unborn baby, I will walk away from Robles Enterprises," Elias said, leaning in close. "I will resign as CEO. I will liquidate my shares. I will take Sofia, and I will leave the country. You will be left with Rodrigo to run the company—and we both know he will bankrupt it within a year. You will lose your grandson, you will lose your granddaughter, and you will die alone in this house with nothing but your money and your pearls."
Leonor gasped, her hand flying to her chest. For the first time in her life, she looked genuinely afraid. She looked at Elias, searching his eyes for a bluff, but she found only iron.

"You wouldn't," she whispered.
"Try me," Elias said. He turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving his mother trembling in the sunlight.
