Chapter 4 - Confrontation and Truth

Three days had passed since Sofia’s discharge, and Valeria had thrown herself into her work to keep her mind from spinning out of control. She worked double shifts, ignoring the gentle warnings of her OB-GYN and her colleagues who told her she needed to rest. Work was her sanctuary, the only place where she felt in control.

But her peace was shattered on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

Valeria was in her small office, reviewing patient charts, when her door flew open. Standing in the doorway was a woman she had only ever seen in newspaper society pages: Doña Leonor Robles.

Leonor was dressed in a tailored navy blue suit, her hair perfectly coiffed, carrying an aura of absolute authority. She stepped into the tiny office, her eyes sweeping over the humble metal desk, the mismatched chairs, and the medical posters on the wall with clear disdain.

"Dr. Torres," Leonor said, closing the door behind her.

Valeria slowly closed the chart she was reading. She stood up, her hand instinctively resting on her stomach, feeling the familiar, protective instinct rise within her. "This is a private office, Señora Robles. You cannot just walk in here."

"I can walk anywhere I please," Leonor said, walking over to the window and looking out at the gray Mexico City rain. "But I wanted to see you in your element. I wanted to see the woman who has managed to completely derail my son's life."

"I haven't derailed anything," Valeria said coldly. "Elias and I are over. I have made no demands on him, nor do I plan to. Now, please leave, or I will have security escort you out."

Leonor turned around, a cold, patronizing smile on her face. "Security? Please, Dr. Torres. I donate more to this hospital's foundation than you will earn in a lifetime. Let's not play games. I know you are pregnant. And I know you intend to use this child to tie yourself to my family."

"I want nothing from your family!" Valeria said, her voice shaking with anger. "Your family is toxic, cruel, and devoid of any real humanity. I would rather raise my daughter in poverty than let her spend a single second near you."

"A daughter," Leonor mused, her eyes narrowing. "A girl. How convenient. Sofia is already the established heir to the Robles estate. Another daughter only complicates the succession. I am here to offer you a deal, Dr. Torres. A very generous one."

Leonor opened her designer handbag and pulled out a sleek, leather-bound checkbook. She laid it on Valeria's desk, along with a document.

"This is an agreement," Leonor said. "Upon signing, you will receive five million US dollars. It will be deposited into an offshore account in your name. In exchange, you will leave Mexico. You will move to Europe—Spain, perhaps—and you will never return. You will sign away all parental rights to Elias, and you will agree to never reveal the true parentage of the child to anyone. The child will be raised elsewhere, far from the Robles name."

Valeria stared at the checkbook, and then at the document. A wild, hysterical laugh escaped her throat. "You are insane. You actually think you can buy my baby?"

"I can buy anything, Dr. Torres," Leonor said, her voice hardening. "This is your only chance to walk away with a fortune. If you refuse, I will make your life a living hell. I will ensure your medical license is revoked. I will sue you for sole custody of that child, and with my resources, I will win. I will brand you as an unfit mother, an opportunist, and a fraud. You will end up with nothing—no job, no money, and no baby."

Valeria took a deep breath, her heart pounding, but her mind suddenly became crystal clear. She looked at the powerful woman standing before her, and she felt no fear. Only pity.

"You think your money makes you god, Señora Robles," Valeria said, her voice calm, steady, and filled with an undeniable strength. "But you are nothing but a sad, lonely woman who is terrified of losing control. You cannot buy my daughter. And you cannot threaten me anymore."

Valeria reached down, picked up the checkbook and the document, and walked over to the paper shredder in the corner of her office. She dropped the document inside, watching as it was instantly shredded into tiny, useless strips. Then, she picked up a pair of medical scissors from her desk and cut the checkbook cleanly in half, dropping the pieces into the trash can.

"Get out of my office," Valeria said, pointing to the door. "And if you ever come near me, my child, or my hospital again, I will take this recording straight to the police and the press."

Valeria tapped her pocket, revealing her smartphone. The screen was lit up, showing a voice recording app that had been running since Leonor walked in.

Leonor's face turned a violent shade of red. Her perfect composure finally shattered. "You miserable little—"

Before she could finish her insult, the door to the office flew open again. Elias stood there, breathing heavily, his eyes wild. He looked at his mother, and then at Valeria.

"Mother," Elias said, his voice laced with a fury so deep it made the room seem to shake. "What did I tell you?"
