Chapter 5 - Breaking the Chains

"Elias," Leonor gasped, quickly trying to regain her composure, though her hands were shaking. "This woman... she was threatening me. She is trying to extort us—"
"Stop lying!" Elias roared, stepping into the room and slamming the door shut behind him. "I saw your car outside. I knew exactly what you were doing. I heard you, Mother. I heard what you said to her."
He looked at Valeria, his eyes filled with a mixture of profound shame and intense worry. "Valeria, are you okay? Did she... did she hurt you?"
"I am fine, Elias," Valeria said, her voice steady but cold. "Your mother was just offering to buy my daughter for five million dollars. Apparently, that is the price of a Robles family legacy."
Elias turned to his mother, his face dark with a hatred that Leonor had never seen in her son before. "You are a monster," he whispered. "You have spent your entire life manipulating me, controlling my father until the day he died, and trying to turn Sofia into a mini-version of yourself. But this is where it ends."
"Elias, be reasonable!" Leonor argued, her voice rising in pitch. "I am protecting you! She wants to ruin us!"
"No, Mother. You are protecting your ego," Elias said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a manila envelope, throwing it onto Valeria's desk. "I've been busy the last three days. I didn't just threaten you, Mother. I acted."
Leonor frowned, looking at the envelope. "What is that?"
"Those are my resignation papers as CEO of Robles Enterprises, effective immediately," Elias said, a calm, liberating smile spreading across his face. "And those are the documents liquidating my entire shareholding in the company. I sold them to our main competitor, the Alarcon Group. They now own forty percent of Robles Enterprises. You no longer have a majority on the board."
Leonor’s jaw dropped. She staggered back, clutching the edge of Valeria's desk for support. "You... you sold our heritage? To the Alarcons? You destroyed the family business!"
"I saved myself," Elias corrected her, his voice ringing with absolute freedom. "And I saved my daughters. I have transferred all my personal assets into a private trust for Sofia and Valeria's baby. You cannot touch it. You cannot sue for custody, because I am no longer part of your corrupt world. I have no power in your company, and you have no power over me."
"You are insane!" Leonor screamed, tears of pure rage spilling down her cheeks. "You are throwing away everything for a... for a nurse! For a bastard child!"
"Get out," Elias said, his voice low and dangerous. "Get out of this office, get out of my life, and never, ever come near my family again. If you do, the Alarcons will get the rest of my shares, and I will personally release the forensic audit of your tax evasion schemes to the federal authorities. Yes, Mother. I know about the offshore accounts in Panama. I've known for years. I was just too loyal to use them. But my loyalty to you died the moment you threatened my child."
Leonor stared at her son, realizing with absolute certainty that she had lost. Her power, her influence, her control—all of it had vanished, crushed under the weight of her own greed and malice. She gathered her purse, her face a mask of bitter defeat, and walked out of the office without saying another word.
The door closed, and a heavy, profound silence fell over the room.
Elias turned to Valeria, his shoulders slumping as the adrenaline began to fade. He looked exhausted, but for the first time since Valeria had known him, he looked truly peaceful.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry it took me this long to fight for you."
Valeria looked at him, her heart aching with a complex mix of emotions. He had destroyed his own empire to protect her. He had walked away from billions, from his status, from his family, just to keep her and their baby safe.
"Elias..." she began, her voice cracking.
"You don't have to forgive me, Valeria," he said, stepping closer, his eyes pleading. "I know I don't deserve it. I know I have a lot of making up to do. But please, let me be a father to our daughter. Let me protect you. I don't need the money. I don't need the company. I just need you. Both of you. And Sofia... Sofia needs her sister."
Valeria looked down at her belly, feeling a gentle kick. She looked back up at Elias, seeing the sincere, raw love in his eyes—the love she had desperately wanted to see six months ago.

"It won't be easy," she whispered.
"I don't care," Elias said, a tear of relief slipping down his cheek. "I will spend the rest of my life earning your trust."
