Chapter 7 - The Storm and the Sun

The peace they had built was put to the ultimate test three weeks later.

It was a stormy night in late August. The rain was pouring down in sheets, mimicking the night Valeria had left Elias six months prior. Valeria was asleep in her bedroom in Coyoacán, Elias having moved into the guest room of her house to be close as her due date approached.

At 2:00 AM, a sharp, white-hot pain woke Valeria from her sleep. She gasped, grabbing her belly. She waited, her professional mind counting the seconds. Another contraction hit, stronger and closer than the first.

She sat up, and as she did, a warm rush of fluid confirmed what she already knew.

"Elias!" she called out, her voice tight with pain.

Within three seconds, the door flew open. Elias was already dressed in sweatpants and a t-shirt, having been sleeping with one eye open for the past week. He saw the expression on her face and immediately sprang into action.

"It's time?" he asked, his voice remarkably calm despite the panic fluttering in his chest.

"Yes," Valeria gasped, holding through another contraction. "My water broke. They are close, Elias. We need to go now."

Elias helped her up, grabbed the pre-packed hospital bag, and woke up the nanny who had been staying with Sofia. Within ten minutes, they were in the car, navigating the flooded streets of Mexico City.

The drive to San Gabriel Hospital was a blur of rain, flashing traffic lights, and Valeria's heavy breathing. Elias held her hand the entire way, letting her squeeze his fingers until they were numb, whispering words of encouragement.

"You're doing great, Valeria. We're almost there. Just breathe, mi amor."

When they arrived at the hospital, the emergency room was just as chaotic as it had been the night Sofia broke her wrist. But this time, Valeria was not the doctor in the white coat; she was the patient.

They rushed her to the labor and delivery ward. The OB-GYN on duty, Dr. Mendez, a close friend of Valeria's, met them there.

"Well, Valeria," Dr. Mendez smiled, checking her progress. "Your daughter is in a hurry. You're already eight centimeters dilated. No time for an epidural, my friend. You're going to have to do this the old-fashioned way."

Valeria groaned, but nodded. "Let's... let's just get her out."

The next three hours were a grueling test of endurance. Elias never left Valeria's side. He bathed her forehead with a cool cloth, held her up when she had to push, and let her scream into his shoulder. He was her rock, solid and unwavering, absorbing her pain and giving her his strength.

"One more push, Valeria!" Dr. Mendez called out. "I can see the head! She has a lot of hair!"

"I can't, Elias, I can't," Valeria sobbed, exhausted.

"Yes, you can, Valeria," Elias pleaded, his own tears falling onto her forehead as he kissed her temple. "You are the strongest woman I have ever known. Do it for our girl. Do it for us. I love you so much."

With one final, monumental effort, Valeria pushed.

A sharp, loud cry filled the delivery room, cutting through the tension like a beam of sunlight.

Dr. Mendez smiled, lifting a beautiful, pink, screaming baby girl. "It's a girl! A perfectly healthy, beautiful baby girl!"

Valeria collapsed back against the pillows, sobbing with sheer relief and joy. Elias was crying openly now, his chest heaving as he looked at the miracle of life before them.

They cleaned the baby and laid her gently on Valeria's bare chest. The moment the baby touched her mother's skin, her crying stopped. She let out a tiny sigh, her little hand reaching out to grasp Valeria's finger.

Elias leaned over them, his arms wrapping around both of them.

"She's perfect," Elias whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "She looks just like you."

May you like

"What should we name her?" Valeria asked, looking up at him through her tears.

Elias smiled, kissing the baby's tiny forehead. "Lucia," he said. "Because she brought the light back into our lives."
