Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past

Just as peace seemed to have firmly rooted itself within the Moretti estate, the dark world outside attempted to claw its way back in.
It happened on a cold Tuesday in November. Alessandro was in Manhattan meeting with the heads of the other families to finalize a permanent restructuring of the shipping lanes, leaving the estate under the watch of his trusted capos.
Late in the afternoon, two unmarked black SUVs turned off the highway and sped past the front gates before the guards could verify their clearance. They screeched to a halt in front of the grand entrance. Four men in dark tactical gear stepped out, ignoring the shouts of the estate guards. They were from a splinter faction in Chicago—men who believed Alessandro had grown weak and distracted by domestic life. They had come to send a message.
Inside the mansion, Signora Greco heard the commotion and immediately bolted toward the upper floors.
"Lily! Take Mia and lock yourselves in the panic room behind the study!" Signora Greco yelled, her face pale with terror as she grabbed Lily’s arm. "They're here for the master's weakness. They know about the child!"
Lily’s blood ran cold. Adrenaline surged through her veins. Without hesitation, she grabbed Mia, who was crying from the sudden noise, and sprinted down the corridor toward the master suite.
The heavy front doors of the mansion blew open with a deafening crash as the intruders kicked them in. Shouts echoed up the grand staircase.
Lily pushed Mia inside the secret panic room hidden behind the bookshelf in Alessandro’s study, pulling the heavy steel door shut just as heavy boots thundered into the room outside. She held Mia tightly against her chest, whispering soothingly into her hair while tears streamed down her face. She listened to the terrifying sounds of wood splintering, glass shattering, and the shouts of men searching the rooms.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the panic room rattled violently. A gruff voice yelled from the outside, "We know someone's in here! Open the damn door or we blow the hinge!"
Lily closed her eyes, pressing her hands over Mia’s ears, and whispered a desperate prayer.
At that exact moment, the front courtyard echoed with the sound of roaring engines. A fleet of black Mercedes vehicles tore through the gates, crashing into the intruders' parked SUVs.
The front doors of the mansion blasted open again—not with a kick, but with the terrifying, absolute fury of a storm.

"Clear every room!" Alessandro’s voice roared through the halls, sounding less like a man and more like an avenging angel of death. "Kill anyone who touches a single brick of this house!"
The gunfight was short, brutal, and utterly decisive. Within three minutes, the silence of the estate was restored, broken only by the heavy breathing of the Moretti guards securing the perimeter.
