Chapter 2 - The Arrival at the Gates

The rain began to fall just as the old Ford sedan sputtered to a halt outside the wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate. The engine gave one final, choked cough and died, sending a small plume of gray steam up from beneath the hood. Inside the car, Lily Carter wiped the condensation off the passenger window with the sleeve of her faded wool coat and stared out at the towering stone lions guarding the entrance.

"Is this the place, Mommy?" a tiny voice whispered from the back seat.

Lily turned around, offering a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach her tired eyes. Her daughter, Mia, was sitting in a worn booster seat, clutching a stuffed rabbit with missing ears named Barnaby. Mia was three years old, with huge, expressive brown eyes that seemed to take in everything around her, and a mop of curly chestnut hair that defied any attempt at a brush.

"Yes, sweetie. This is it. Sit tight for just a second while I talk to the nice man," Lily said, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She opened the car door and stepped out into the chilly autumn drizzle. A guard stepped forward immediately from the shelter of the gatehouse. He was a broad-shouldered man in a heavy black trench coat, his hand resting casually near his hip. He looked at Lily, then at her sputtering car, with an expression of cold indifference.

"Private property. Turn around," the guard said, his voice flat.

"Wait, please," Lily said, pulling a folded piece of paper from her pocket. "My name is Lily Carter. I’m the new assistant housekeeper. Signora Greco told me to be here by eight o'clock."

The guard stared at the paper for a long moment before tapping a code into the keypad beside the gate. A low, heavy buzzer sounded, and the iron gates groaned open, revealing the long, winding drive that led to the mansion. "Drive straight up. Park in the back near the kitchens. Don't wander."

Lily nodded, hurried back into her car, and coaxed the reluctant engine back to life. As she drove up the long gravel driveway, she felt a profound sense of foreboding. She hadn't wanted to take a job at the Moretti estate. Everyone in New York knew whispers of who Alessandro Moretti was, even if the newspapers rarely printed his name alongside anything illegal. But desperate times called for desperate measures. Mia’s medical bills from her recurring respiratory infections had drained every penny Lily had saved from her previous job at a diner in Queens, and her landlord had given her an ultimatum.

When she parked near the kitchen entrance, Signora Greco was already waiting under the overhang. The elderly head housekeeper wore a starched black dress and an expression of severe authority, though there was a flicker of kindness in her eyes when she spotted Mia peeking through the back window.

"You're late, Miss Carter," Signora Greco said, holding a large black umbrella over her head. "In this house, punctuality is next to godliness. Follow me. Quick now, before the master wakes."

Lily unbuckled Mia, picked her up, and hurried after the older woman, clutching Barnaby the rabbit in one hand and a cheap canvas duffel bag in the other. As they stepped through the back doors and into the warmth of the massive kitchen, Lily had no idea that her arrival was about to crack open a door that had been locked away for three agonizing years.
