Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Encounter

The next afternoon, the sun managed to break through the gray clouds, casting long, golden shafts of light across the marble floor of the grand foyer. Lily was on her knees near the base of the grand staircase, meticulously polishing the brass trim with a soft cloth.
Mia was sitting a few feet away on a plush velvet settee, quietly playing with Barnaby the rabbit. Lily had warned her a hundred times not to move from that spot, but three-year-olds have a unique talent for testing boundaries.
While Lily’s head was down, focused on her work, Mia’s attention was caught by a magnificent, glittering chandelier hanging overhead, reflecting the sunlight in a thousand brilliant colors. Fascinated, the little girl slid off the settee and toddled across the open expanse of the foyer, chasing a dancing beam of light on the floor.
At that exact moment, Alessandro Moretti stepped out of his study at the end of the main hallway.
He was deep in thought, reviewing a mental list of shipments, when a sudden flash of movement near his feet made him freeze. He looked down.
Standing right in front of him was a little girl. She was wearing a faded pink dress with a small patch on the knee, and her unruly brown curls bounced as she tilted her head back to look up at him. She didn't look terrified, the way grown men looked when they found themselves standing in his path. Instead, her big brown eyes sparkled with innocent curiosity.
Alessandro’s breath caught in his throat. For a horrifying second, time twisted backward. The suit, the empire, the blood, the gun in his shoulder holster—all of it vanished. He saw only a memory of another little girl with those same dark, inquisitive eyes.
"Who are you?" Alessandro’s voice came out lower and harsher than he intended, rough from years of disuse.
Mia didn't flinch. She simply clutched Barnaby tighter to her chest, looked up at the terrifying, impeccably dressed man towering above her, and gave a small, bright smile.
Before Alessandro could process the surreal moment, Lily scrambled up from the floor, her face completely drained of color, dropping her polishing cloth with a loud clatter.
"Mia!" Lily shrieked, running forward and scooping her daughter into her arms so fast she nearly dropped her. She pressed Mia’s face into her shoulder, bowing her head so low her forehead nearly touched the marble floor. "I am so, so sorry, Mr. Moretti! Please! She didn't mean to wander! I-I was just cleaning the trim, and—please don't fire us, please, I'll pack our things right now—"
Lily’s voice trembled with a mixture of terror and fierce maternal protection. She braced herself for the explosion—for the cold, ruthless fury she knew men like him possessed.

Instead, the hallway fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Alessandro didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at the woman holding the child. His gray-blue eyes locked onto Lily’s wide, terrified eyes, and for the first time in three years, the steady, rhythmic beating of his heart skipped an entirely different kind of beat.
