Chapter 8 - Healing the Broken Fortress

Over the next few months, the transformation of the Moretti estate stunned everyone who worked there. The guards stopped patrolling with drawn expressions; the kitchen staff began laughing in low tones over morning coffee; and Signora Greco was frequently seen smiling as she baked small, sweet pastries that Mia eagerly devoured.

Lily had been promoted from assistant housekeeper to personal secretary and estate manager, a position that kept her working closely with Alessandro in his study. At first, Lily had been terrified of him, keeping her eyes cast down and her answers brief. But as the weeks passed, she discovered a side of Alessandro Moretti that the criminal underworld never saw.

He was brilliant, meticulous, and deeply protective. And whenever Mia was around, the cold mafia boss melted into a gentle, endlessly patient guardian.

It happened every afternoon at four o'clock. Mia would finish her afternoon coloring in the study, toddle over to Alessandro’s desk, and climb uninvited onto his lap. Alessandro would stop whatever multibillion-dollar contract or syndicate negotiation he was reviewing, set his pen aside, and let Mia show him her latest crayon drawing of a blue rabbit or a crooked house.

"Is this Barnaby?" Alessandro would ask, pointing to a lopsided creature with green ears.

"No, silly! That's you!" Mia would giggle, poking him in the chest.

And Alessandro Moretti—a man who hadn't genuinely laughed in a decade—would let out a low, rumbling chuckle that warmed the cold stone walls of the mansion.

Lily watched these interactions from her desk across the room, her heart swelling with a warmth she hadn't felt since her husband had passed away years ago. She saw the way Alessandro looked at Mia—not just with affection, but with a fierce, unwavering devotion that proved he would burn the entire world to the ground before letting anything harm the little girl.

One evening, after Mia had fallen asleep curled up on the leather sofa in the study, Lily stood up to gather her things.

"You don't have to carry her all the way up to the second floor tonight," Alessandro said quietly, standing up from his desk and walking over to the sofa. "Let me."

Before Lily could protest, Alessandro carefully scooped the sleeping toddler into his arms, supporting her head against his broad shoulder with practiced ease. Lily followed him up the grand staircase and down the eastern corridor to their suite.

As Alessandro gently laid Mia down in her bed and pulled the blanket over her chin, he lingered for a long moment, brushing a stray curl from her forehead.

"You've brought life back into this mausoleum, Lily," Alessandro said softly, not looking up as he spoke to her standing in the doorway. "I don't know how to thank you."

"You didn't have to thank me for anything, Mr. Moretti," Lily replied softly, her voice steady. "You gave us a home when we had nowhere else to go. That's more than enough."

Alessandro turned around, his cold gray-blue eyes locking onto hers in the dim light of the hallway. There was a question hanging in the air between them—unspoken, heavy, and full of possibility.
