Chapter 6 - A Fracture in the Ice

"Put her down."

Alessandro’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried an authority that commanded absolute obedience.

Lily’s heart dropped into her stomach. She slowly lowered Mia to her feet, keeping one protective hand firmly on the little girl's shoulder, positioning herself like a shield between the mafia boss and her child. "Mr. Moretti, I swear she didn't touch anything. She's just a baby. If you want us to leave—"

"I didn't say leave," Alessandro interrupted. He took one slow step forward.

Lily held her breath. Up close, Alessandro Moretti was terrifying. He radiated an aura of raw, concentrated power, an apex predator accustomed to deciding who lived and who died with a flick of his wrist. Yet, as he looked down at Mia, something strange flickered across his cold gray-blue eyes—a sudden, sharp flash of pain so deep it looked physical.

Mia looked up at Alessandro, completely unaware of the danger surrounding them. She tilted her head, her curiosity overriding her mother's desperate warnings. She noticed the small silver cuff links on his dark sleeves, shaped like tiny anchors.

Without a word of warning, the toddler took one brave step away from her mother, reached out a small, chubby hand toward Alessandro's immaculate charcoal-suit sleeve, and tugged gently on his fabric.

Lily gasped, her hand shooting out to grab Mia back, but she froze at Alessandro’s sudden movement.

Alessandro looked down at the tiny hand resting against his expensive suit. His entire body went rigid. Slowly, agonizingly, he raised his own right hand—the hand that signed death warrants, controlled ports, and held the East Coast in an iron grip—and hovered it just above Mia’s small fingers.

"Daddy... can I hold your hand just once?" Mia asked softly, her innocent voice echoing clearly in the vast, silent marble foyer.

The words hit Alessandro like a physical blow.

Daddy.

The syllable tore through the thick walls he had built around his heart for three agonizing years. A sudden, violent wave of grief crashed over him, so overwhelming that he felt the room tilt. He closed his eyes tightly for a fraction of a second, fighting a war against the tears he had sworn never to shed again. When he opened them, the coldness was entirely gone, replaced by a raw, bleeding vulnerability that no one had ever witnessed in the history of the Moretti syndicate.

Slowly, deliberately, Alessandro knelt down.

The expensive fabric of his trousers brushed the dusty marble floor. He ignored it. He extended his large, calloused hand—a hand stained with the sins of a dark underworld—and opened his palm.

Mia didn't hesitate. She placed her tiny, warm hand directly into his.

May you like

Alessandro closed his fingers around hers, gripping her small hand as if letting go would cause the earth to stop spinning. A single, silent tear broke free from the corner of his eye, tracking slowly down his sharp jawline before disappearing onto his collar.

Lily stood frozen a few feet away, her hands covering her mouth, tears welling in her own eyes as she watched the most feared man in New York break down in total silence over the touch of a little girl.
