Chapter 8 - The Pieces Fit Again

Months passed, and the rhythm of their lives shifted from survival to abundance. Emily’s health continued to improve under the care of the top medical specialists Julian had hired. Her cheeks regained their rosy color, and her laughter once again echoed through the halls of the mansion.

Lila was thriving. She now had a playroom that rivaled a toy store, but her favorite activity remained walking through the gardens holding her father's hand.

One Saturday afternoon, Julian arranged a small family gathering. He had tracked down Emily’s older sister, Clara, whom Emily had lost touch with during her years of isolation and illness.

When Clara walked through the front doors of the mansion, Emily dropped the tray she was carrying. The two sisters rushed into each other's arms, weeping and holding each other tightly.

"I looked for you everywhere, Em!" Clara cried, squeezing her sister. "When I saw Julian's press conference on the news, I couldn't believe it."

"I'm so sorry, Clara," Emily cried. "I was so scared, so isolated."

Julian watched the reunion from the top of the stairs, holding Lila in his arms. Mrs. Higgins stood beside him, wiping a tear from her eye with her apron.

"You did a good thing, Mr. Maddox," the housekeeper whispered. "You brought the light back into this house."

"They brought the light back into me, Mrs. Higgins," Julian replied softly.

Later that evening, after Clara had left with promises of frequent visits, the house was quiet. Julian found Emily sitting on the rug in Lila's room, watching their daughter sleep peacefully in her crib.

Emily looked up as Julian entered. She reached out her hand, and he sat down on the floor beside her, pulling her into his side.

"Thank you," she whispered, her head resting on his shoulder. "For everything. For Clara. For Lila. For not giving up on me."

"I could never give up on you," Julian said, kissing her temple. "We've spent enough time looking backward, Emily. I think it's time we start looking forward."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box. Emily’s breath caught in her throat as he opened it. Inside sat the exact engagement ring he had bought seven years ago—a stunning, vintage-cut sapphire surrounded by a halo of diamonds.

"I kept it in my safe all this time," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I never could bring myself to get rid of it. Emily Hart, you are the mother of my child, the keeper of my heart, and the only woman I will ever love. Will you do me the honor of finally becoming my wife?"

May you like

Emily looked from the ring to Julian’s eyes, which were filled with a hope so pure it brought fresh tears to her eyes.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice ringing clear in the quiet room. "A thousand times, yes."
