Chapter 3 - Whispers of Truth

The next morning broke with a fragile, pale sunlight filtering through the clouds. Julian hadn't slept. He had spent the night in his study, staring at a silver-framed photograph of Emily from seven years ago, and then looking at the security feeds showing the guest room where his daughter slept.

At 7:00 AM, a soft knock sounded at his study door.

It was Mrs. Higgins, his head housekeeper. Her expression was a mix of maternal concern and professional discretion. "Sir, the young lady and the little girl are awake. The chef has prepared breakfast."

"Thank you, Mrs. Higgins. How is... how is Lila?" Julian asked, the name still feeling foreign yet profoundly right on his tongue.

"She's a darling, Mr. Maddox. A bit quiet, but she has your eyes, if you don't mind me saying."

Julian’s chest swelled with an unfamiliar emotion. He stood up, smoothing his tailored suit, and made his way to the dining room.

When he entered, the sight stopped him in his tracks. Lila was sitting in a high chair that Mrs. Higgins had somehow procured overnight, her face smeared with pancake syrup. Emily sat beside her, looking rested but deeply anxious, dressed in simple clothes the staff had rushed to purchase that morning.

"Good morning," Julian said softly, stepping into the room.

Lila’s head snapped up. She looked at him with wide, curious eyes, a half-eaten strawberry clutched in her small fist. "Hi, tall man," she chirped.

Julian couldn't help the genuine laugh that escaped his lips. "Good morning, Lila. Did you sleep well?"

"Big bed," Lila nodded solemnly. "Like a cloud."

Emily managed a small smile, though her eyes remained guarded. "Thank you for the clothes, Julian. And the food. We should probably leave after breakfast. I need to look for a shelter that takes children, and—"

"No," Julian interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You aren't going to any shelter. You are staying here. I've already instructed my legal team to draft acknowledgment of paternity papers. Not to take Lila from you," he added quickly, seeing the flash of panic in her eyes, "but to ensure she is legally my heir. And to ensure you both have full security."

Emily set her fork down, her hands shaking. "Julian, you can't just buy your way into our lives. You can't command me to stay."

"I'm not buying anything, Emily. I am providing for my daughter and the woman I..." He paused, the words catching in his throat. "The woman I never forgot. Let me do this. Please."

Before Emily could respond, Julian’s phone buzzed aggressively on the table. It was his assistant, Marcus. Julian answered it with a sigh. "Marcus, I told you I'm out of the office today."

"Mr. Maddox, we have a crisis," Marcus's voice was panicked. "Someone leaked a photo of a woman and a child entering your estate last night. The board is demanding to know if this affects the upcoming merger with the Vanguard Group. The press is already gathering at the gates."

Julian looked at Emily, then at Lila, who was giggling at a drop of syrup on her finger. The world outside was trying to break in, but Julian was no longer the boy who could be manipulated by his father's ghost.

"Let them talk," Julian said coldly into the phone. "And call a press conference for tomorrow morning."
