Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The rain continued to lash against the glass, a relentless rhythm that matched the pounding in Julian’s chest. Emily’s confession hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. “I still love you. Even if you hate me.”
Julian looked at her, his eyes dark with a complex cocktail of sorrow, resentment, and a fierce, buried tenderness. He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stepped closer, the distance between them shrinking, though the emotional chasm felt miles wide.
"I don't hate you, Emily," he said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "I hate the choices you made for us. I hate that you thought so little of my love that you deemed it too fragile to withstand the truth."
Emily flinched as if struck. She pulled the plush robe tighter around herself, looking suddenly small against the backdrop of the massive balcony. "You don't understand what it was like, Julian. Your father had just approached me. He told me what the IPO meant for the Maddox legacy. He said a distraction—a sick girlfriend and an unplanned baby—would tank the stock before it even launched. And then the diagnosis came. I felt like a curse."
Julian stiffened. "My father?"
"He gave me a choice," she confessed, her voice trembling. "Leave with enough money for treatment, or stay and watch him ruin your standing in the company before you even had a chance to lead it. I didn't take his money, Julian. I couldn't. But I took his advice. I left to save you."
The revelation hit Julian like a physical blow. The late Arthur Maddox had always been a ruthless businessman, but to orchestrate the disappearance of the woman Julian loved was a cruelty he hadn't anticipated.
"He's been gone for two years," Julian said, his hands clenching into fists. "And all this time, I thought you just fell out of love."
"I never stopped loving you," Emily sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "But look at me now. I'm broken, Julian. The cancer is in remission, but the medical bills took everything. I lost my job, my apartment... that’s why I’m here. Not to claim a piece of your fortune, but because Lila hadn't eaten a proper meal in forty-eight hours. I was desperate."
Julian closed the distance between them, his anger evaporating, replaced by an overwhelming urge to protect. He reached out, his large hands hesitating before gently resting on her shoulders. "You are here now. That is all that matters. You and Lila will never want for anything again. I swear it."
Emily looked up through her tears, searching his face. "We can't just play house, Julian. Too much time has passed. We are strangers now."

"Then we will get to know each other again," Julian replied firmly. "For Lila. And maybe, eventually, for us."
He guided her back inside, away from the cold wind. As she walked toward the guest wing, Julian watched her retreat. The girl in the red summer dress was gone, replaced by a survivor. And Julian knew he would have to become a different man to win her back.
