Chapter 5 - Learning to Walk Together

The next morning, the grand library of the Maddox estate was converted into a temporary briefing room. Julian stood at the podium, the bright lights of the television cameras reflecting off his sharp features. Emily watched from the wings, holding Lila closely.
"Thank you all for coming," Julian began, his voice projecting a calm authority that silenced the murmuring room. "There have been many rumors circulating regarding my personal life over the past twenty-four hours. I am here to clarify the facts."
A reporter stood up. "Mr. Maddox, is it true that a woman claiming to be your ex-fiancée has moved into your home with a child? Is this an extortion attempt?"
Julian’s eyes flashed with a dangerous fire. "The woman you are referring to is Emily Hart. She did not extort me. She is the love of my life, and the mother of my daughter, Lila."
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
"Seven years ago, due to circumstances orchestrated by my late father, Emily left Seattle. She did so to protect me while fighting a private battle with cancer. She raised our daughter under extreme hardship. Two days ago, fate brought her back to my door. I have already signed the legal recognition of paternity. Lila is my daughter, my legal heir, and from this day forward, any attack on Emily or Lila will be treated as a direct attack on me and the Maddox Corporation."
Julian paused, looking directly into the main camera lens. "As for the Vanguard merger, if the board views a man taking responsibility for his family as a liability, they may withdraw their proposal effective immediately. Thank you. No questions."
He stepped away from the podium, ignoring the shouting reporters, and walked straight to Emily. He took Lila from her arms and offered Emily his elbow. Together, they walked out of the room, leaving the media in a frenzy.
Back in the private quarters, Emily sank into a sofa, her heart hammering. "You really just threatened a multi-billion dollar merger on national television."
"I did," Julian smiled, a genuine, boyish grin that Emily hadn't seen in nearly a decade. "And it felt incredible."
"Daddy!" Lila chimed in, pointing at the television screen which was currently showing a replay of Julian's speech. "Daddy on TV!"
Julian froze, his eyes widening. He looked down at the little girl on his lap. "What did you say, sweetheart?"
May you like
"Daddy," Lila repeated, giggling as she booped his nose with her tiny finger.
Tears sprang to Julian's eyes. He looked up at Emily, who was also weeping softly. He leaned down and kissed Lila's forehead, then reached out and pulled Emily into the embrace. For the first time in seven long years, the three of them were in the same space, bound by a word that changed everything.
