Chapter 4 - The Fractured Mirror

The gates of the Maddox estate were besieged by paparazzi by afternoon. Flashing lights flickered through the iron bars, capturing the grand facade of the house that had suddenly become a fortress.
Inside, Emily stood by the living room window, watching the chaos with a sinking heart. "This is exactly what I feared," she whispered to herself.
Julian walked in, holding Lila on his hip. The little girl had taken a liking to his watch, turning the bezel with fascinated focus. "Don't look at them, Em," Julian said gently. "They are gnats. They can't touch us in here."
"But they can ruin you," Emily turned, her eyes wide with anxiety. "The Vanguard merger... I know how much you wanted that. If they think you're embroiled in a scandalous secret-baby drama, the conservative board members will back out."
Julian set Lila down on the plush carpet with a pile of building blocks. He walked over to Emily, standing close enough that she could smell the familiar scent of sandalwood and cedar that had always defined him.
"Seven years ago, I cared about mergers and stock prices because I thought that was the only way to earn respect," Julian said, his voice steady. "But today? I own the company. I am the company. If Vanguard doesn't like my family, they can find another billionaire to partner with."
"Family?" Emily repeated the word, her voice breathless.
"Yes, family," Julian said, taking her hand. His skin was warm, a stark contrast to the icy rain that had chilled her the night before. "I lost seven years with you, Emily. I lost seeing my daughter's first steps, hearing her first words. I am not losing another second for the sake of a corporate board."
Emily looked down at their joined hands. The familiarity of his touch sent a shiver through her, awakening feelings she had spent years burying under the harsh reality of survival. "It's not that simple, Julian. I'm not the girl you loved. I have scars. I have trauma. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night terrified that the cancer is back. I'm... I'm a mess."
"Then let me help carry the mess," Julian said fiercely. "You fought cancer alone. You raised our daughter alone in poverty. You are the strongest person I have ever known. Let me be strong for you now."
A gentle cough interrupted them. Marcus stood at the doorway, looking apologetic. "Sir, the legal team has arrived with the paternity filings. And... there is another issue. Your cousin, Thomas, is talking to the media. He's claiming this is a setup to manipulate the company's valuation."

Julian's expression darkened. Thomas had always wanted the CEO chair. "Marcus, tell the legal team to wait in the library. And as for Thomas... prepare the files we have on his offshore accounts. If he wants to play dirty, I'll remind him who owns the playground."
Emily watched Julian command the room. He was powerful, commanding, yet when he looked back down at Lila, his expression softened into pure devotion. She realized then that the boy she loved hadn't disappeared; he had just grown armor. And for the first time in seven years, she felt a glimmer of hope.
