Chapter 7 - Ghosts in the Boardroom

With the corporate threat neutralized, the true work of healing began at home. Julian made sure his schedule was cleared by 4:00 PM every day. The billionaire who used to work twenty hours a day was now found building fortresses out of sofa cushions and hosting tea parties with stuffed animals.
One evening, after Lila had fallen asleep, Julian found Emily in the mansion's expansive greenhouse. She was standing by a patch of white roses, the moonlight illuminating her profile.
"You used to love the garden," Julian said softly, stepping inside the warm, earth-scented air.
"I did," Emily smiled wistfully. "In that little apartment I had, I tried to grow tomatoes on the fire escape. They always died. Not enough sun. Here, everything thrives."
Julian walked up behind her, gently wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. She leaned into him, a soft sigh escaping her lips.
"I bought this estate because of the garden, Emily," he admitted near her ear. "I bought it because it reminded me of the dreams we used to talk about. I lived here alone for years, surrounded by flowers, thinking of a girl who wasn't there to see them."
Emily turned around in his arms, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Julian, I need to tell you the rest of the truth about why I didn't come back after the cancer went into remission."
Julian frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
"I was ashamed," she confessed, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I looked in the mirror and I didn't see the beautiful girl you fell in love with. I had lost my hair, I had lost weight, I had scars from surgeries. And I was broke. I thought if I came back to you like that, you would look at me with pity, not love. I couldn't bear the thought of being a burden to the man who was conquering the world."
Julian’s heart broke for the girl who had suffered so much in silence. He took her face in his hands, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears.
"Look at me, Emily," he commanded softly but fiercely. "You could be in rags, you could have no hair, you could be broken into a million pieces, and you would still be the most beautiful woman in the world to me. I didn't love you for a red dress or a pretty smile. I loved your soul. And your soul is invincible."
Emily choked back a sob, her hands gripping his wrists. "Do you really mean that?"
May you like
"With every beat of my heart," Julian whispered. He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.
It wasn't a kiss of urgency or passion, but one of profound reverence and healing. It was a promise that the ghosts of their past no longer held power over their future. As they pulled apart, the shadows that had lingered between them for seven years finally began to dissipate.
