Chapter 5 - Behind Bails and Barriers

Three days later, I was finally discharged from the hospital. Though I was still weak and required assistance walking, being back in our quiet apartment brought an overwhelming sense of relief. Ethan was incredibly attentive, ensuring my medications were taken on time, preparing meals, and constantly checking my surgical dressing.
However, the peace was temporary. Judith’s wealthy brother, Uncle Richard, stepped in to post her bail. Armed with high-priced defense attorneys, Judith was released pending trial under strict home confinement orders.
Within twenty-four hours of her release, the harassment began again. Anonymous phone calls, toxic text messages from burner numbers, and veiled threats were directed at both Ethan and me. Judith’s legal team began floating a narrative to the local press: that I was an unstable daughter-in-law who had staged an assault to extort money from a prominent family, and that Ethan was under my hypnotic control.
"They want us to settle," Ethan said one evening, looking over a cease-and-desist letter sent by Judith’s lawyers. "They're offering to drop all civil countersuits if we drop the criminal assault charges and refuse to testify in the wire fraud case."
I sat up on the sofa, propping pillows behind my back. "And what do you want to do, Ethan?"
Ethan looked at me with an intensity I had never seen before. He picked up the lawyer's letter, slowly tore it into small pieces, and threw it into the trash can.
"We are going all the way," he said quietly. "My mother has spent her entire life manipulating everyone around her, using money and guilt to destroy people. She tried to hurt you physically. She tried to ruin your reputation. I am taking the stand, Clara. I am going to tell the judge and jury every single detail of what she did."

To ensure our safety, Ethan installed a security system around our apartment and petitioned the court for an emergency restraining order. The judge granted a permanent order of protection: Judith was forbidden from coming within five hundred yards of us, our home, or my workplace.
The lines were drawn. The court date was set. The Carter family's dark legacy was heading straight for a public reckoning.
