Chapter 2 - The Truth Behind the Wedding

The emergency room doors burst open, and the medical staff wheeled me into an operating suite to assess the damage caused by Judith’s assault. My vision blurred as warm saline and iodine washed over my abdomen. The attending surgeon, Dr. Vance, muttered under his breath as he inspected the ruptured external sutures. Judith’s desperate attempt to physically tear open my incision had forced several deep stitches loose, causing localized hematoma and internal tearing that required immediate re-suturing under light sedation.
Beside me, Ethan refused to leave the room until the nurses gently guided him to the adjacent hallway. His face was a mask of deathly pale shock and white-hot fury. Through the glass, I could see his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were completely drained of color.
While the surgical team repaired the tears, the police officer who had taken Judith into custody returned to take my formal statement. The monitor beeped rhythmically, steadying as the pain medication kicked in.
"Mrs. Vance," the officer said softly, holding a digital voice recorder. "Can you tell me exactly what led to Mrs. Judith Carter entering your room?"
I took a shaky breath, looking up at the tiled hospital ceiling. To understand why Judith had tried to rip my stomach open, the police needed to understand the months of sabotage leading up to Ashley’s wedding—and the terrible secret my sister-in-law and mother-in-law were trying so desperately to hide.
Six months prior, Ashley Carter had announced her engagement to Julian Sterling, the heir to a prominent real estate enterprise. From that exact moment, Judith had turned the wedding preparations into a battleground. But more than that, Judith had secretly demanded that Ethan and I fund half of the exorbitant $200,000 wedding budget under the guise of 'family solidarity.' When Ethan and I firmly declined, citing our own financial goals and mortgage, Judith’s affection turned into open hostility.
The true conflict, however, had ignited just forty-eight hours before the ceremony. As an accountant, I had been asked by Julian’s father to double-check the vendor invoices for the reception venues, as Julian’s family was paying the major vendors directly. While reviewing the receipts, I discovered a terrifying discrepancy: over $80,000 in venue fees and catering deposits had been wired not to the vendors, but directly into a private offshore account registered under Judith’s maiden name.
When I confronted Ashley and Judith privately at the rehearsal dinner, expecting a misunderstanding, Judith had cornered me in the bridal suite. She didn't deny it. Instead, she hissed that the money was her 'rightful compensation' for raising Ethan and Ashley, and threatened that if I said a single word to Julian or his father, she would make sure Ethan divorced me.
When my appendix inflamed violently on the morning of the wedding, forcing an emergency appendectomy, Judith and Ashley did not see a medical crisis. They saw a cover-up. They believed I was faking or orchestrating a medical emergency to avoid attending the wedding, or worse, that I had already exposed the missing $80,000 to Julian’s family.
As Dr. Vance finished tying off the last external stitch and covered the site with heavy gauze, Ethan re-entered the room. His eyes were red, but his resolve was absolute.
"The officers have Judith in central booking," Ethan said, his voice trembling with emotion. "She’s being charged with aggravated felony assault and battery on a vulnerable person. And Ashley is outside in the waiting room right now, screaming that we ruined her life."

I looked at my husband, reaching out to touch his cold fingers. "Ethan... did you tell Julian’s family about the stolen money?"
Ethan nodded slowly, a dark look settling over his features. "I didn't have to. Julian’s father called me ten minutes ago. The vendors canceled the reception mid-party because Judith’s checks bounced. The entire wedding collapsed."
