Chapter 3 - Evidence in the Shadows

By midnight, the surgical unit had quieted down. The heavy sedation began to lift, leaving a dull, throbbing ache across my abdomen. Ethan sat on the uncomfortable vinyl armchair beside my bed, holding my hand as if letting go would cause me to vanish into thin air. He hadn't slept or eaten since early morning, but every time I urged him to rest, he simply shook his head.
"I promised to keep you safe," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I let my mother walk into your room while you were defenseless. I will never forgive myself for those five minutes."
"You stopped her, Ethan," I replied, squeezing his fingers softly. "You stood up to her when it mattered most. That’s what counts."
Our moment of quiet was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door. Detective Marcus Vance entered, accompanied by Julian Sterling’s father, Arthur Sterling. Arthur looked devastated and exhausted, his immaculate tuxedo wrinkled and undone at the collar.
"Mrs. Carter," Arthur said, stepping forward with genuine remorse. "I am deeply sorry for intruding on your recovery. But the police informed us of the assault, and we need to understand the full extent of what Judith has done."
I gestured toward my bedside table, where my personal handbag sat. "Ethan, hand me my tablet. The financial records are all saved on the secure cloud server."
Ethan retrieved the device and unlocked it. I brought up the spreadsheet and bank transaction logs I had compiled before my sudden hospitalization. I handed the tablet to Arthur and Detective Vance.
"Judith didn't just mismanage the wedding funds," I explained, my voice steady despite the lingering pain. "She set up a dummy shell company named 'Carter Events Management' and presented fake invoices to the Sterling family. Over the past four months, she siphoned off nearly ninety thousand dollars intended for floral arrangements, high-end catering, and orchestra bookings. She paid cheap local contractors fraction rates in cash and pocketed the rest."
Arthur stared at the digital receipts, his jaw clenching tightly. "So when the catering company refused to serve the main course at the reception tonight, it wasn't because of an administrative error. It was because they were never paid."
"Exactly," I said. "Judith panicked when I confronted her at the rehearsal. She knew that once the wedding started, the vendors would demand full payment. She needed a scapegoat. When I was rushed to the hospital with acute appendicitis, she attempted to frame my sudden absence as a deliberate act of spite, claiming I had sabotaged the payments out of jealousy."
Detective Vance took notes meticulously. "And when she came to your hospital room after the ruined reception..."
"She came to intimidate me into remaining silent, or to force me to take the blame," I said firmly. "When she realized I wouldn't bend, she attacked me directly where I was wounded."

Arthur closed his eyes in shame. "My son is currently breaking off the marriage. Ashley is at the police station trying to post Judith's bail, claiming that you forced Judith to transfer the money. But these bank statements prove total premeditation."
Ethan stood up, his posture tall and unyielding. "Tell Ashley that if she steps foot on this floor, I will have her arrested for trespassing. My mother is going to prison, Arthur. And anyone who aided her will face the exact same fate."
