Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Ashley

The following morning, sunlight filtered through the blinds of my hospital room. The swelling around my incision had stabilized, though the doctors insisted on keeping me under strict observation for another forty-eight hours to ensure no internal infection developed from the assault.

Around 10:00 AM, loud shouting echoed down the corridor. Despite the security guards posted near the nurses' station, Ashley forced her way into the hallway. She was still wearing her disheveled bridesmaid dress from the previous night, her mascara smeared down her cheeks, her hair tangled and wild.

"Ethan! Let me in!" she shrieked, banging wildly on the glass partition. "You monster! You put Mom in jail!"

Ethan immediately stepped out into the hallway, slamming the door behind him to protect me from the commotion. Through the small window, I watched the confrontation unfold.

Ashley grabbed Ethan’s lapels, shaking him hysterically. "Do you have any idea what you've done? Julian canceled the marriage! His family’s lawyers are freezing all our accounts! Mom is sitting in a holding cell with criminals because of your pathetic, attention-seeking wife!"

Ethan didn't flinch. He grabbed Ashley’s wrists and forced her hands off his clothes with icy composure.

"Clara almost died twice yesterday," Ethan said, his voice loud enough to resonate down the entire floor. "First from a burst appendix, and second because our mother tried to physically tear her open in that bed. Did you know she did that, Ashley? Did you know she physically attacked a woman who had just come out of major surgery?"

"She was upset!" Ashley screamed defensively. "You humiliated our family in front of high society! Clara has been plotting against us since day one! She deliberately stole those invoices to ruin my big day!"

At that moment, Detective Vance walked up the hallway alongside two uniformed officers.

"Miss Ashley Carter?" the detective asked sternly.

Ashley turned, her voice shrill. "Arrest him! He shoved our mother to the floor! He assaulted her!"

"Miss Carter," Detective Vance replied, pulling out a set of warrants. "We have reviewed the bank transfers and communication logs provided by your sister-in-law and the Sterling family. We have sufficient evidence proving you co-signed the dummy account under 'Carter Events Management' and actively participated in grand larceny and wire fraud."

Ashley’s face drained of all color. Her arrogance collapsed in a single second. "What? No! Mom told me it was legal! She said it was an advance on my inheritance!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Detective Vance stated calmly as the female officer turned Ashley around and clicked handcuffs onto her wrists. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As Ashley was escorted down the hallway sobbing and screaming for her mother, Ethan returned to my bedside. He sat down, took my hand, and pressed his forehead against my knuckles. The illusion of his toxic family had completely shattered, leaving behind only the clear, painful truth.
