Chapter 8 - The Long Road to Healing

Two months later, the doors of the NICU opened, and the chief pediatrician walked out with a warm smile.
"She’s four pounds, eight ounces today, Clara," the doctor said softly. "Her lungs are fully developed, her vital stats are perfect, and she is ready to go home."
Tears of pure happiness streamed down my face as I cradled tiny Hope in my arms. Wrapped in a pink wool blanket, her big blue eyes looked up at me, clear and full of life. She had survived against all odds.
Alex was waiting outside the hospital in his truck. As he helped me carry the car seat inside, I looked at his calm, reassuring face.
"Where are we going?" I asked softly.
"Home," Alex said with a smile. "Real home."
When we arrived at my childhood estate, I gasped. The neglected, dark house I remembered had been completely transformed. Alex and his veteran team had spent the last two months renovating the entire property.
The broken front door was replaced with solid oak; the dark, cold kitchen where the tragedy took place had been completely gutted and rebuilt into a bright, warm space with skylights, white marble counters, and golden sunshine streaming through wide glass windows.
Outside, a beautiful nursery with hand-painted murals of forests and starlight was waiting for Hope.

"You did all this?" I whispered, looking around in awe.
"We built a sanctuary," Alex said, clapping a hand on my shoulder. "No bad memories allowed here anymore. Only new beginnings."
