Chapter 5 - Sanctuary in the Emergency Room

The hospital doors burst open into a blur of bright white lights, shouting doctors, and the rhythmic, terrifying beep of heart monitors.
"Twenty-six weeks pregnant! Severe blunt force trauma to the abdomen and thighs! Signs of internal bleeding!" the paramedic reported rapidly as they pushed my gurney down the hallway.
"Get her to OR 3 immediately!" a sharp voice commanded. It was Dr. Vance, a senior OB/GYN surgeon. "Prepare for emergency laparotomy and possible micro-preemie delivery!"
"Alex..." I held onto his hand with all the strength I had left. "Don't let them..."
"I'm right here, Clara. I'm not leaving," Alex promised, his voice trembling as he walked alongside the gurney until the double doors of the surgical suite closed between us.
Inside the operating room, everything moved at lightning speed. Masks were strapped over faces, IV lines were inserted into my arms, and a cold liquid washed over my abdomen.
"Clara, hear my voice," Dr. Vance said calmly, looking down into my eyes. "We need to operate now to stop the bleeding and check on your baby. You're going under anesthesia. Trust me, okay?"
"Save... my baby..." I whispered before the oxygen mask was placed over my face. The world spun into darkness once more, but this time, it was a darkness filled with hope, not terror.
Hours felt like minutes. When I finally opened my eyes, the harsh glare of the OR had been replaced by the soft, warm ambient light of a private ICU room. The incessant sound of shouting was gone, replaced by the quiet, steady rhythm of a heart monitor.
I slowly moved my hand down toward my belly.
It was smaller.
Panic seized my chest instantly. My heart rate spiked, causing the monitors to beep rapidly. "My baby! Where is my baby?!"
"Clara! Clara, calm down!" Alex was instantly by my bedside, gently pressing his hands on my shoulders.
"Alex! Is my baby...?" Tears flooded my vision.
"She's alive, Clara. She's alive," Alex said, tears welling up in his own eyes as he smiled warmly. "You had a baby girl. She’s small—just barely two pounds—and she’s in the Neonatal ICU right now on a ventilator, but the doctors said she’s a fighter. Just like her mother."

I let out a ragged sob of pure relief, collapsing back onto the pillows. "She's alive..."
"She's alive," Alex repeated softly. "And Trent and his family are behind bars. They were denied bail."
