Chapter 6 - The Hammer of Justice

Three weeks passed. My physical injuries began to heal, though the deep bruises on my skin were a slow reminder of that night. Every single day, I spent hours in the NICU, sitting beside an incubator, holding my thumb inside the tiny fist of my daughter, whom I named Hope.

While I healed, Alex worked tirelessly with the district attorney, Victoria Vance—who happened to be Dr. Vance's sister and one of the state's most ruthless prosecutors.

In a high-security courtroom downtown, the arraignment took place. I sat in a wheelchair accompanied by Alex and his team, watching as Trent, Helen, Richard, and Nicole were led in wearing orange jumpsuits and wrist chains.

Trent looked hollowed out, his smugness completely gone. When his eyes met mine, he tried to glare, but Alex stepped slightly into his line of sight, and Trent immediately averted his eyes.

"Your Honor," Prosecutor Victoria Vance announced, standing tall before the judge. "The state presents video evidence recovered directly from the defendant Nicole’s private cloud storage, which automatically recorded the brutal, pre-meditated assault on Clara Miller."

The defense attorney stood up hastily. "Your Honor, my clients were under immense emotional distress, and the entry of the victim's brother was an illegal home invasion—"

"Quiet!" the Judge slammed her gavel, her face hardened like flint. "I have reviewed the audio and video footage submitted by the prosecution. What transpired in that house was not a marital dispute. It was attempted torture and aggravated murder of an unborn child."

Victoria Vance stepped forward, placing a thick dossier on the podium. "We are charging Trent Mitchell with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Felony Assault, and Domestic Torture. We are charging Helen and Richard Mitchell as co-conspirators in Aggravated Assault and Depraved Indifference. Nicole Mitchell is charged with felony complicity and illegal distribution of abusive media."

Helen broke down in tears, grabbing her lawyer's arm. "We didn't mean it! It was just a family matter! Clara, tell them! Tell them you forgive us!"

I looked directly at Helen, my voice clear and steady through the microphone set before me.

"I will never forgive you," I said softly. "You watched me bleed and laughed. You deserve every day of the darkness you built for yourselves."

The judge brought down the gavel with a resounding bang. "Bail is officially revoked for all four defendants. They will remain in maximum security custody until trial."

As the guards dragged the crying family out of the courtroom, Trent turned back, shouting incoherently, but his voice was swallowed by the heavy oak doors closing behind them.
