Chapter 7 - Desperate Measures

A week of sleeping in a cheap, rundown motel had driven Adrian to the brink of madness. He was broke, his phone was ringing constantly with calls from debt collectors, and his lawyers had abandoned him after his credit cards were declined.
He knew he was facing prison time. The evidence of fraud was overwhelming. His only hope, his only remaining leverage, was the triplets.
If I can get custody of the boys, Adrian thought, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at a cheap map of the city, the Vances will have to negotiate. They won't let their heirs grow up in a broken home, or let me drag their name through a public custody battle. They’ll pay me off. They’ll give me millions to disappear.
It was a desperate, foolish plan, but he had nothing left to lose.
He spent two days watching the entrance of the Vance estate from a rented, dented sedan. The gates were heavily guarded, but he noticed that every Tuesday morning, a private pediatric van entered the estate to perform routine check-ups on the babies, as they were still too young to travel safely to a public clinic.
On Tuesday morning, Adrian waited. When the medical van approached the outer gates, he waited for the security guards to open the barrier. As the van slowly drove through, Adrian slammed his foot on the gas, attempting to tailgate the vehicle past the security checkpoint.
It was a fatal mistake.
Before his car could even cross the threshold, a heavy steel barrier rose instantly from the driveway, crushing the front bumper of his sedan. At the same time, four armed security guards flanked his vehicle, their weapons drawn and aimed directly at his head.
"Get out of the vehicle with your hands up!" Thomas’s voice boomed over a loudspeaker.
Adrian, coughing from the deployed airbag, stumbled out of the car, his hands shaking violently as he raised them in the air. "I... I just want to see my sons! I have parental rights! You can't keep me from my children!"
Evelyn stepped out from the security lodge, flanked by her father and a team of police officers who had been waiting for this exact moment. She looked at him not with anger, but with a profound, chilling pity.
"You have no rights here, Adrian," Evelyn said, her voice steady and clear. "The court issued a temporary restraining order against you three days ago, based on evidence of your unstable mental state and financial desperation. And as of this morning, a federal warrant has been issued for your arrest."
A police detective stepped forward, pulling Adrian's arms behind his back and clicking a pair of cold, steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, identity theft, and violation of a restraining order," the detective said, pushing him toward a waiting police cruiser.
"Evelyn, please!" Adrian begged, his voice cracking as he was forced into the backseat. "We built a life together! Think of the boys! Don't let them grow up with a father in prison!"
Evelyn walked up to the open window of the cruiser, looking down at the man who had once tried to destroy her when she was at her weakest.

"The boys will grow up knowing their mother was strong enough to protect them from a monster," she said softly. "And as for their father? They will never even know your name."
The door slammed shut, and the cruiser drove away, its sirens echoing through the quiet, peaceful hills.
