Chapter 10 - A Legacy of Light

Ten more years flew by like a beautiful dream.

Evelyn stood in the grand foyer of the Vance estate, adjusting the tie of her oldest son, Logan, who was now fifteen. Beside him stood Lucas and Liam, both tall, handsome, and wearing matching charcoal suits. They were preparing to attend the opening of the Vance-Sterling Children's Pavilion, a state-of-the-art pediatric wing she and Julian had spent years building.

Julian walked down the stairs, looking dashing in his tuxedo, and naturally wrapped an arm around Evelyn’s waist. They had been married for eight years now, a union built on mutual respect, deep love, and a shared passion for making the world a better place.

"Are you ready, my queen?" Julian whispered, kissing her temple.

"More than ready," Evelyn smiled, looking at her beautiful, complete family.

Her parents, Alistair and Eleanor, though older now, still possessed the same regal grace. They walked out of the study, smiling warmly as they saw their grandsons.

"You look just like your grandfather, Logan," Eleanor praised, adjusting the young man's lapel. "A true gentleman."

"Thank you, Grandmother," Logan smiled, his eyes bright with intelligence and kindness.

As the family walked toward the waiting limousines, Evelyn’s phone buzzed with a brief, final notification from Thomas.

Subject: Update. Adrian Vale was released from federal prison this morning after serving his ten-year minimum. He has been issued a standard transition ID, has no assets, and has taken a low-wage job as a night shift janitor in a city three states away. He has been officially notified that any attempt to contact you or the boys will result in immediate re-incarceration. He poses no threat.

Evelyn stared at the message for a brief moment.

She looked back at the memory of that broken girl in the hospital bed, sobbing into her phone, believing her life was over. She remembered the cold weight of the divorce papers, the mockery of the mistress, and the arrogant laughter of a man who thought he had won.

She felt no anger. She felt no hatred. She felt only a profound, beautiful sense of closure.

Adrian Vale had sought to erase her, but in doing so, he had only forced her to discover the true depth of her own strength. He was now a forgotten ghost, a shadow of a past that had no bearing on her brilliant, sunlit present.

"Mom? Are you coming?" Liam called out, leaning his head out of the car window with a bright, impatient grin.

May you like

"Coming, sweetheart," Evelyn replied.

She slipped her phone into her pocket, turned her back on the past, and walked toward her family, her heart overflowing with love, peace, and the triumphant, beautiful life she had fought so hard to build.
